Getting skunk stink off..

...my dog and out of my house. As if getting beat this weekend by blow u wasn't enough. I got home and picked up my dog from my folks house and he had been sprayed by a skunk. My parents gave him a tomato juice bath, which seemed to work some. And I gave him a bath with hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap, which worked very well. What I was wondering is what can be done to get the smell out of the house. It's not bad, but I want to get rid of it. Is there anything I can buy or is it best to just wait it out?

My stinky dog and stinky parents house appreciate any proven methods.

This was just recently a topic on that myth buster tv show, and the two idiots purposely got skunk sprayed to test different remedies. I believe they concluded that tomato juice and baking soda both beat the commercial skunk smell remedy. Looks like you will have to host a wild bloody mary weekend bash. When do we all come over?

Thanks for the responses.

There is still a little odor, but it's fading. Not that it really matters, but I have a chocolate lab that has a very dark brown coat and now he has a slight reddish tint. Doggie peroxide highlights, but I'll take that over the smell anyday and I'm sure my dog agrees.

Nature's Miracle is the best stuff ever. Good link zzzz.

There isn't a product in the world that I would recommend as highly as Nature's Miracle. I use the stain and odor formula.

It gets ANYTHING out of the carpet or any fabric. It will remove animal ****, animal piss, coffee stains, ANYTHING. Get this - enough of it was even able to remove a wine spill after it had dried! It works like the stain removers do in commercials.

When I was in elementary school, a skunk had a litter under our house. My folks put bleach into mason jars and put them in every room throughout the house. We changed them out everyday for about a week. That seemed to help get the smell out of the house.

I have used the same trick when 1) a squirrel died in our chimney while we were away for a week. The smell in the house was horrible and it took a couple of days to find the source. 2) our freezer went out when we were on vacaction, leaving a lot of meat and more importantly, 2 frozen turkeys, to thaw. My neighbor called me Dahmer because he saw me dragging a freezer out in the back yard at 2 in the morning, with a smell that would knock a cow off of its milk.

In both cases, the jars of bleach seems to soak up the smell.

I may try the jars of bleach. It couldn't hurt and I'm not sure what else to do besides open up the windows and air out the house. At least the weather is nice and cool.

My mother always subscribes vinegar in shallow dishes. It works great for a lot of things, and quickly. Can't hurt, its cheap.
