Getting rid of Field Mice/Rats

A friend of mine has a smoker on his back porch not used in years, and it is infested with these rodents.

His house back up to a park and he thinks they are coming from that area. They have been found in his house also. He has a dog and 2 cats, but they are doing nothing for the issue.

What is the best way to get rid of these things and make sure they do not come back.

I will take humane and inhumane suggestions.

Had the same problem with yard backing up to greenbelt. Field rats seem to like the feed in the bird feeders and then went up gutters and into house.

If you can keep your pets inside, Decon(?) rat bait will do the trick quickly. You may have to put out a diffenrent box every day for two or three days if the infestation is bad. I was told that a rat will tend to eat the entire contents of the box by itself if left alone to do it. It is not a pretty site just before the rat "passes" and it hemorrages and you need to dispose of the dead before other wildlife can find them. Box says that dead rats pose no threat to other animals (cat or dogs) that may eat rats but when you see what they do to the rats I don't think I would trust it. Anyway my mortality count was about 15 in three days. Trimmed the tree limbs over the roof and quit feed birds and no rats in the last 7 years.

Owls seemed to like the rats also! I used to have about three hang around the yard at night. Have not seen them lately either. I guess that is a good sign

I had the same problem and got rid of them with mouse traps from HEB. I baited them with dog food. If you have pets, just place them where the pets can't get at them. Check the traps daily and it won't take long before you start trapping the little suckers.

I had the exact issue. My condo backs up to a field/creek. I could hear the little ******** in the walls. It was disturbing.

just got some traps and they were gone in no time.

The cats and gopher snakes work wonders. Only problem I had was the coyotes, hawks & bald eagles loved the cats too (hard to explain to toddlers who've grown attached to them), and the gopher snake showed up at my back door one fall afternoon to sun himself on the warm concrete and I about peed my pants after almost stepping on him.

That was one well-fed gopher snake!
