Getting new desktop... ? about Macs

We've already decided to make the jump to a Mac. Would you recommend getting a refurbished? We just need it for web surfing, picture storage, music storage (but not a lot), school work. Typical family stuff, no gaming or anything fancy. Which would you take?

We found a 24 in refurb for 1199 that has:

2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB memory
320GB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory

Or should we go with a new 20in for 1199:
2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs)
320GB Serial ATA, 7200 rpm
8x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics

Since you probably don't need the improved graphics of the new iMac, I'd go with the bigger display for the same money.

I bought a refurb MacBook Pro in September 2007 and it has been great. I think they come with a full warranty, same as new, so you're covered. You'll enjoy the larger screen over the 20 inch.

Good choice on the switch.

Assuming the warranty is the same, I have never had problems with refurbished items. And Mac has always made quality stuff.

not to rain on your parade but that is an awful lot of money for very little computer.

You should be able to get double to triple those numbers for that money.

Mac and PC #s don't compare to each other. For what you are paying, a Mac will probably last three to four times as long as a comparable PC. I have owned three Macs over the same period of time a good friend of mine has replaced his PC nine or ten times. Do the math...if you can afford the upfront money, you will save in the long run.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know we could have gotten a PC for 600 bucks but we decided we wanted a Mac. We bought the refurb.

I think he means that it will last longer as far when it will be outdated. I dont know about 3 or four times longer, but i always felt like my PC's showed their age quicker than my macs

Getting a Mac was the best thing I have ever done as far as computers goes. I use to laugh at people that had them, now I laugh at people with SLOW *** Dells and ****. I have the new MacBook Pro and I think it is worth the $1,700. You will never look back.

As far as desktops go, my girlfriend has a 24" and she uses the hell out of it due to her major (digital design). It might be overkill for web surfing and picture saving however.

I'm thinking that I'll be getting a NETBOOK this year. At US$400 with the 7hr battery and coming in at about 2.5-3lbs, I think that I'll be much happier than if I spent ~6 month's rent to get a MAC.

It's a documented fact (that I don't have time to find) that Macs stay in service much longer than PCs. If I recall it's about 2X. It's a combination of factors including the hardware. Yes, I know they all use the same components and ODMs, but in my experience the industrial/mechanical design of Macs is generally better (but not always) which results in a more robust machine. This is especially true for laptops. Another factor is frustration with Windows and viruses, etc. People (especially non-techy types) get tired of trying to make it work and just give up and go buy a new PC. More recently, they go buy a Mac.
