Getting credit rating information...

Every now and then I try and get copies of my credit report from Transunion, TRW and Equifax.

I've used the 3-in-1 on-line reports but they are difficult to read. But what I've discovered is there are always errors on these reports. Accounts that have been closed for years are on there and other accounts are listed more than once.

Making corrections is a big hassle. You send letters to these agencies and you never know if they made the corrections unless you buy more reports.

It's such as lousy system. The only debt I carry is a mortgate but I'd take a class on personal debt management just to learn how to keep this ridiculous system from causing me major and unexpected grief someday.

Does anyone know of a good website with reliable information or an on-line tutorial that deals with this madness?

Clark Howard is the ultimate magnet for your issue. He will tell you that it takes time and effort to have the credit agencies move incorrect information. Then, they are likely to place in back on your credit report. It's a hassle.

I used to work in credit predictive modeling for a few years; go to MyFICO, it has all the info you'll need. FICO (Fair, Isaac Corp) provides the methodology behind the credit score used by the various agencies, whether they call it a Beacon score, Trak score, etc.

Get your FICO score, and they'll give you info about where that places you in relation to the rest of the population. If you're in a range you feel comfortable with, don't worry about the indvidual items, unless there's an error that shows you have an unpaid debt or a delinquency. Odds are good that if you have a mortgage in good standing and a credit card you've had for 7 years with no problems, your FICO score is excellent, and that's all that really matters. You definitely won't have any unexpected surprises if you keep your eye on it periodically...
