I wonder how well they isolated that variable - because hands up tend to happen when a defender is closer to the shooter vs the shooter being wide open. Is it still a 12% boost to the defense when the distance from the defender to the shooter is accounted for?

they probably selected a distance beyond which they would not look at. Normally, though, you got to be pretty close before you put up a hand to bug the shooter.
