Get rid of dish, but keep the dvr

Anyone had any experience in getting rid of dish and then buying or keeping the dvr. I've got a s/l of world cup games, movies, etc that I want to keep. Will dish go for an offer made by me to buy the dvr?

if not, is there someplace I can take it to burn the material from the dvr hard drive before returning it?

Thanks.

From what I've read: When you get rid of your provider, and (someway) keep the DVR - it won't work for you. It has to do w/ the DVR & the providers' system being digitally linked.Just think of this as the DVR "phoning home". Perhaps this is why, when you buy a Tivo, you choose one based on a particular provider (I think?).

Someone can confirm/deny, but I assume satellite is the same.

I did something while subscribed to Uverse. I had a lot of content that I didn't want to part with, so, while waiting for the truck to replace the DVR, I removed the disk drive, and imaged the the entire thing. It had some flavor of Microsoft CE on it.... didn't work, couldn't access it. No phoning home, no workie.

Thanks for the response. I unhooked the dvr from the wall and can still view the recordings. According to the verizon guy, the recordings are saved to the hard drive of the dvr, so I don't think they can erase the recordings without access to the dvr.

what is this vcr you speek of?

I tried to do this with a direct tv dvr box and couldnt watch my recorded shows with out it phoning home first. I bet if the box were to be reset after you unplug the signal then you wouldnt beable to access it again. but what do i know?
