Two underreported developments the past week. The first has to do with Putin’s attendance at an Austrian wedding and side meeting with Merkel. The second is a call from the German foreign minister recommending that Germany and the EU develop a payment system to bypass the United States.
Putin’s visit basically solidified the Nordstream 2 gas project that will connect Russian gas directly to Germany, thus killing any hope for US exports to Europe. This appears to be a done deal.
The plan put forward by the German foreign minister is designed to offset US economic pressure against any move made by the EU contrary to the US wishes.
