Best shrimp po boy I've ever had in my life. Old rundown building but clean interior and very friendly staff.

Is anyone on this board a frequent visitor? I've lived in Austin my whole life but had never heard of it until I came across it in the Statesman a few weeks ago.

It has immediately jumped to the top of my list of best tasting lunches under $10. I would really encourage yall to check it out if you havent already.

Gene's was ok, but I personally think it is overrated. My experience just wasn't very good. Terrible waitress, everything took too long, and just wasn't that impressed with the sandwich. Glad your experience was better than mine.

Oh yeah, I too have lived in Austin my whole life, 32 years. We need to start a "Best lunch under $10" thread.

gene's is good, i like to make a trip over there every now and then.

but the po boys at shoal creek and sambets both pwn gene's. and my several experiences at gene's have been similar, with poor and slow service. i still go though, i like the soul food menu. some of those dishes are enough to split with someone else. plus they have ice cold barq's in bottles.

i'd like to see a best lunch under $10 in austin thread too. there was a best sandwich under $10 thread once, but it was just sandwiches and not limited to austin.

I like Gene's, have always had a good meal.

I have not had the poboy yet, only the fried chicken and daily specials.

The smothered pork chops blew my mind.

I lived in New Orleans for five years and my wife is a Louisiana native. We both think their hot roast beef po-boy is the best we've had outside of Louisiana. Their seafood po-boys are pretty good also.

And yes, the smothered pork chops on Thursdays are amazing as well as Tuesdays when their special is jambalaya and fried chicken wings.

Gene's smothered pork chops are unreal. If you haven't had them, you must give them a try.

I agree with GakFoo on Sambet's and Shoal Creek being better. My Gene's experience took 1.5 hours to get a poboy and a link of boudin which, it turns out, was frozen.

Decent food (but better options exist in Austin), very poor service.
