Garner State Park

Going with my daughter's Girl Scout troop. Anything I should know? Apparently the head scout rented campsites with covered shelter.

Fishing? Fires? Sports bars?

No sports bars for miles! There's a good restaurant in Concan, which isn't far - Neal's. They make the best rolls - yummy with honey. Garner State Park is fairly isolated, though, although you can buy beer and wine in Leakey, and maybe on the highway near Concan.

It should be pretty now, so have fun!

old baldy. ice box cave. crystal cave. rock beach. the frio. nightly dances. what is there not to like about garner. garner rocks.

fishing is ok. keep in mind that garner is THE busiest state park for overnight camping. it might lead the state in # of visitors also. anyway, the frio around garner gets a lot of fishing pressure. but what the hell, you're in the hill country on vacation, even if you don't catch any fish, you'll still have a great time trying.

climb old baldy. and make sure you go to ice box cave. when i went as a kid, EVERYONE knew about ice box cave. i've recently started taking my girls and it seems that the visitors now don't know about ice box cave. must be because the trails leading to it have a sign in front saying off limits. don't pay attention to it. and when you go there, see if you're man/brave/stupid enough to walk all the way to the back w/out flashlight. we did it so many times that we didn't even take flashlights w/ us.

hike to crystal cave. it's a nice hike. and it's really just a room w/ small crystal formations. i hear in the 60s, it had plenty of crystals. but people being people, they took them all. still worth the hike.

you can tube from 1050 to the park. or you can tube from majors all the way to concan.

neal's is a good suggestion. good food.

i went over spring break and i'm looking to go again before summer gets underway.

Garner is beautiful. It really is one of Texas' state park treasures. Clear blue swimming holes, rope swing galore, jumping off boulders into the frio, generations of families dancing in the evenings... so much fun.

It is almost blasphemous to mention any desire to go to a sports bar while you are there. Fortunately, there isn't anything resembling a sports bar for miles.

Enjoy your time with your daughter and her troop. Don't worry about the rest of the world while you are there.

Went last summer. Had a blast but the rangers gave us hell constantly over drinking beer. We didn't know it was prohibited and got caught red handed. After that, we were sneaky with it (koozies and also pouring beer into red plastic cups) but they kept busting our chops.

Just be aware that they are nazis about beer there so if you drink any be careful not to get caught.

We walked to the river from our site one day and sat in the river (not deep enough to swim) and enjoyed ourselves.

We also drove up the river and tubed which was fun. But we also had a ton of rain last year so the river was in great shape.
