Garage Door Problem

What's wrong with my garage door? Here is the situation

When I press on the remote the door gives a weak little surge but does not lift. I see a black square/bracket thing moving along the beam coming out off the garage door opener. Manually, the door can be opened without any trouble. So what gives and what do I need to look at to fix this? Thanks

most likely the opener is not engaged when you press the button does the opener begin to run its rail meaning do you see the opener chain or screw turning like it wouls be opening the door if so then just raise the door all the way open til you hear the opener arm engage by a click

My garage opener was kinda doing the same thing. Before you spend $50 on someone coming out to fix it, climb up on a ladder on check all the wires and connections to make sure nothing is loose. You will probably have to take off the cover with a screwdriver.

Since openers vibrate like a mo-fo, sometimes the vibrations will shake a wire lose.

Check the power settings on the door opener if they have them. Adjust the upforce to a higher level and retry door. You should keep the setting a little above the mininum to raise the door. If you set too high and door is locked or jammed you will damage your door.

Great moving in story 12 years ago. Our garage door were manually installed after the house was built. Doors still have manual locks on. Somehow before move-in the doors were locked. As we pull into driveway behind movers the first thing I hear from our new house is glass breaking and wood cracking. The door opener was set on the highest upforce level and the movers hit the open button in the garage. The door opener pretty much just ripped off the top panel of the garage door. Cleaning up four broken windows was my first job on moving in day.

A lot of times, the gears inside those things are plastic. They eventually wear out or break.

Plastic gear a possibility. However if you can open the door manually AND you see the piece moving check the connection between the opener and the door. I am betting the pin that connects the opener's bracket to the door itself has been sheared off.

otherwise you would have difficulty opening the doormanually if the connection was rock solid between the door and the opener.
