when will AG announce the starter for game 1? just curious if he may go with green and save chance for game 2

I would like to throw Green in game 1 and save Chance because in game 2, you are either fighting off elimination or you are fighting for the coveted and damn near insurmountable 2-0 start. Either way, you want your best arm on the mound for that.

People say UNC and ASU will throw their #1 guys in game 1, but I don't know about that. Both of those teams have very solid #2 guys as well and may be more willing to spend them in a non-elimination game, saving their best for us.

Whatever the case may be, I think Chance is the perfect guy to have on the mound for game 2.

I completely agree. I will be shocked if Green is not the starter.

He has been masterful the entire post season.

I think Ruffin goes for us and that UNC/ASU both throw their studs. Game 1 is the closest thing to an elimination game. Lose and you're forced to win four in a row.

Well Garrido threw Simmons in game 1 in 2002 but he saved McCullough for game 2 in 2005. He could go either way I guess.

Augie should go with Ruffin. You want your #1 starter in the first game, and you want him back as soon as possible, because you might land in the loser's bracket, or he probably would be ready again for the big winner's bracket game on Thursday or Friday.

I would be SHOCKED if Ruffin did not start Game 1. Augie clearly thinks he gives us our best shot to win.

I guess this is why Auggie is the best coach ever, we will all get to watch and enjoy.

One difference this year is we are playing one of the weaker teams in the CWS in game 1 (So. Miss is not a national top 8 seed). Whatever Augie goes with will have their plus/minus. Personally I would rather start Ruffin for Game 2 but starting off with a W in game 1 is extremely important.

You can't assume a win in game 1, even if we are "only' playing Southern Miss. Still, I don't think going with Green is a huge drop off from Ruffin (same ERA right now).

Don't forget in the Regional, Augie pitched Green in 1 and Ruffin in 2. I think we will see the same in Omaha.

You throw your ace in game one. We have a deep pitching staff to go to from game two on. As was mentioned above, game one is an important win...it doesn't matter that we are playing the cinderella team...they fought their way to Omaha, so don't discount them.

Gotta be Chance, in 05 Alaniz was strongest down stretch and he also was first pitcher in the Championship series. Use Ruffin in game 1 and he can be brought back for game three and for championship series if you get there.

In the regional, you throw your top starter in game 2. In the CWS, you throw him in game 1.

In 2005, McCulloch started both the 1st and 3rd games of the super regionals (b/c the 1st game was postponed a couple innings in due to rain). That is why we saved him for CWS game 2.

Southern Miss is throwing Todd McInnis, who appears to be their ace.

9-4, 3.61 ERA, 90 hits, 42 runs (38 earned), 31 BB 86 Ks, 94.2 innings. Opposing hitters are averaging .252 against him. He's given up 18 extra base hits (11 doubles, 9 HRs).

Sounds like a solid pitcher, but certainly not something we haven't seen before.

Those S Miss cupcakes went 3-1 AT Georgia Tech & 2-0 AT Florida. Those were the #8 and #9 seeds. They didn't get lucky in Atlanta and avoid GT, they had to beat them twice. I'd suspect we (just like NCar & ArizSt) need to put all our eggs into this basket first, hope SMiss falls apart in their 1st game ever at CWS, allowing us to get Ruffin out early....

Not only that, but S. Mississippi will be loved by the crowd, because a)they're Cinderella b)coach retirement story c)underdog always gets the crowd d)they aren't Texas, which beats Nebraska all the time in just about everything.

You're oversimplifying it.

2 aces and a closer only get you to the championship series if you do, in fact, start 2-0, and only 2 teams are going to do that. If you're one of the other 6, you better have at least 1 more quality starter and some good bullpen help because you will be playing 5 games in 7 days, if you're lucky.

I would like to see:

Game 1 Jungmann
Game 2 Ruffin
Game 3 Green

Jungmann has momentum and I'd hate to rely on him a second time in a do or die situation. Next time it won't be TCU. Then you have Ruffin and Green for the next two games... win them all and you're in the series with Ruffin rested for game 1.

Serrano threw his number two starter in game one against Arky. See how that worked out for him?

Ramirez, 3.2 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, L

...and the losers' bracket.
