I absolutely loathe going there, but wife's parents want to go to the "ocean". (They're from Russia)

The thing is, I'm going to Vegas 2 weeks later. So, needless to say I don't want to drop a grand in Galveston to take the family.

Any hotel recommendations? It would be 4 adults and 2 children 8 and under. We're driving from Dallas, so the outskirts of Houston are an option.

go on hotwire and you can get the San Luis Resort or Hotel Galvez (3.5 star hotels).

priceline route will get you Hotel Galvez or Tremont (3 star hotels).

i would assume those are the only hotels in galveston worth a damn.

You can also rent a condo for all of you - there are places right on the corner of 61st and the Seawall.

Recently stayed at Tremont House and thought it was very nice.

Not so much what you are looking for given the family trip, though. I'd think the house/condo rental would be the way to go.

Tremont House did have a very nice rooftop patio and a beautiful bar. Bartender's dry wit was a plus as well.

We got several good recommendations from the board not too long ago (thanks, Hornfans!). Will pass on that Saltwater Grill was good stuff and more reasonably priced than anticipated. Try it out.

i like the beach house idea best. the san luis is nice but across the busiest street in galveston from the beach. you dont want to be crossing that street multiple times a day.

port a or rockport would be more impressive to foreigners, imo

Casa Del Mar - that's the place. It's not fancy but it will do the trick. Take them to one of the pocket parks on the west side of the island for a better beach.

Casa del Mar is great for families. Used to go with parents every year, 2 adults 4 kids) and stayed there every year. Haven't been in almost 10 years but it was a great place back then.
