Going this weekend on birding class field trip-the leader likes Landry's, which as I recall is only so-so. What are some places I should try, besides Gaido's, which I like.
Good shrimp, good fried shrimp basket, something like that.
I usually go to Casey's, I think it is, for breakfast. The coffee shop/lunch spot in the Gaido's Motel. Any other good breakfast spots?

Rudy and Paco's, The Steakhouse at the San Luis is the only Tillman Fertita's restaurant I will eat at besides Brenner's and Willie G's.

Rudy and Paco's, thank me later

Your Landry's recollection is charitable. By all means, redirect your group leader to Gaido's or Casey's for a safe bet. A more adventurous choice for dinner would be Clary's overlooking Offatt's Bayou (just off causeway). Inconsistent on occasion but when Clary himself oversees things it can be ethereal. Time-warp kinda place recalling liquor-by-the-drink days -- love it.

Stick to Casey's for breakfast.

Thanks, will try a couple of these this weekend. I remember Mario's from many years ago-used to be good back in the day.

Another option if your teacher insists on going to a chain restaurant, is Fisherman's Wharf.
The food is a little better than Landry's but the main attraction is the patio that it overlooks the dock with the Elissa, Texas' Tall ship.
On most Sat, there is quite a bit of work going on the ship you can watch volunteers climbing the rigging or practicing sail maneuvers. If you are a fan of old sailing ships, and I am, watching the sails fill with wind or people climbing up to the top of the mast is extremely entertaining.
If you are looking for the best seafood, go with one of the other recommendations.

Benno's at about 12th and Seawall! We go there every day we are in Galveston. Cajun style seafood, very casual, menu on the wall, place your order and they bring it to you. Eat inside or out on picnic tables with rolls of paper towels for napkins. Food includes shrimp cooked various ways, oysters, fish, crabs, boiled potatoes, corn on the cab, gumbo, etc. That should give you the general idea. They have beer to wash it all down. We have been going for years and the quality has never waivered. If this type of fare appeals to you, don't miss it.

oh, and watermans isn't bad if you want to get on the west part of the island. sits on the bay. decent wine menu with your typical $15 -$25 fish/chicken/beef plates.

I will never step inside Mario's again, I walked into the old place and spent the next hour with the owner telling me about the history of Galveston, she served me the best pizza I had ever eaten, years later the building blew down in a hurricane and they built a 2 story tourist trap with horrible pizza.

There is a Greek-owned greasy spoon in downtown Galveston that is like stepping into 1958, including the prices. The food is nothing fancy but they do it well.
