Galveston accomodations

We're heading down to Galveston weekend after next for a friend's 40th birthday celebration. He and his wife have rented a big house on the beach (west Galveston, I think) and we were slated to stay there during the week (we're staggering our rather large group of friends so everybody could stay in the house while they were there) but we're having to go down the weekend before now. Anyway, I haven't been to G'town since stepping on a jellyfish 30 some-odd years ago when I was a wee lad. Any recs? Like I said, it seems like the house they rented is about 10 or so miles from the city center and I think we'll be spending the bulk of our time down there.

This probably won't help, but we just spent 3 nights at the Hotel Galvez, and for the most part found it to be a terrific "grand" hotel. There is no doubt it's 90+ years old, but it has been VERY well-renovated, and while it's not quite the Driskil, it's not the average Omni, either. If you appreciate beautiful old bones, you might consider it.

But it's real close to the city center.
