Funny story: re car buying tips

So after I totaled our family car in early August I was looking for a car. My wife decided to finally tell me she wanted a vehicle that seated six, but didn't want a mini-van. Okay, so this is gonna be tough. (I wanted good gas mileage)

Anyway, so I ended up going through a wasted Saturday morning chasing down a very good deal on a Dodge Quad cab, seated 6, a 2007 for a ridiculously low price $11897, only one problem, it was showing a couple of codes.

No problem, I took the truck down to my favorite local independent mechanic, probably 3 miles from the dealer. Problem, after he checks out the vehicle he tells me can't read the codes, I need to take it to a Dodge dealer. Long story short, deal falls through because of disagreement about how serious problem is.

Okay, next possible used deal, a 2007 Kia Rondo, seats 7, this from a private party. Nice lady, car was in perfect condition, 8600 miles. Only one problem, after I tell her I want to buy the car, she tells me she hasn't done the research on how to transfer title.

No problem, I investigate, my check comes from my credit union, and then after all of that, I'm talking to her credit union that should have the title, and guess what, they don't have the title. The lady had refinanced the vehicle not 7 days prior to me test driving vehicle.

Talked to owner of car while test driving a new car, and she expected the title within 30 days. Bought a new Mazda5, it is a minivan, my wife is satisfied anyway.

Unsolicited advice.

1. Before you test drive any private party car, ask owner if they know where the title is, as in lay their hands on the title.

2. Before you take a car to a mechanic, ask if they can read codes on said vehicle.

3. Try your best to satisfy wife, but know that she can be persuaded the longer the search lasts.

I recently ran into a similar "no title" situation. The seller had recently bought the car and changed their mind. Their lender was still waiting on the title from the state and it would be up to 10 days after they got it before I could get it from them. I was similarly concerned and called my credit union's auto loan officer and he said this happens all the time and not to worry. I just wrote up a bill-of-sale that included terms for delivery of the title and had it notarized. Got the title a few weeks later and all was good. Just make sure the title transfer paperwork isn't dated until you get the title or you could go over your 20 day window to transfer.

somebody was looking out for you. The Kia Rondo is an absolute death-trap especially for the rear passengers...their heads about 8 inches from the back of the vehicle.

I use to get such a kick out of people that would come on to the lot and say, "we need 7 passenger room, want great gas mileage, under no circumstances will consider a mini-van, and don't want to pay more than $300/mo, oh, and we just bought this Tahoe 3 mos ago with no money down, but it's too small." Well ****, I want my own talk show and to be paid in jelly beans, but that ain't happening either.
