Funny: a Brit's take on US advertising and jerky

When I was back in CO a few months ago, I was amazed at the number of ads on TV for prescription drugs too, it was almost every 2nd ad.. I don't remember seeing them that frequently when I moved away 4 years ago. Just goes to show if they can afford that kind of marketing/advertising budget, they must have some pretty big profit margins to support it, coming from ridiculously high prices. Why not pump that advertising money back into R&D? Guess they are just trying to milk the drug for all they can get before it can become a generic...

Why do pharmaceutical companies charge so much for drugs? Their margins on the actual drugs sold, when compared to the cost of producing the drugs, are nearly 50%. What do they do with all of this money?

Hint: Why to chip companies charge so much for processors? Their margins on the actual chips sold, when compared to the cost of producing the chips, are nearly 50%. What do they do with all the money?

Think about how much money it takes to bring a drug to market. The research time, studies, dealing with the FDA, etc. Think about the amount of money spent researching drugs that never come to market.

The mark ups and patent time are warranted or we would never get new drugs.

I've been convinced that we're a nation of hypochondriacs for a long time.

Considering the kind of unhealthy lifestyles many Americans lead, maybe leading a healthier lifestyle will do as much or more than any pill, with no side effects. But eating healthy and exercising is way too hard. I guess some people would rather pay out the *** for a pill instead. To each his own.

So when a generic hits the market are drug developers losing money more because of lost market share or because they have to decrease their price to compete with the generic. For some reason I think its the former because they resist lowering their prices before the patent expires, thus, they rapidly lose market share when a generic is introduced.
It makes more sense to lower the price say 3 months before patent expiration so you can retain some of the market you have captured by selling the drug at a price competitive with a generic.
