Friday Starter

Still soaking in this game while listening to the postgame interviews, but thoughts on Friday's starter?

Pitch count on Jungmann was 79 on Tuesday, 17 on Sunday. 48 pitches for Ruffin on Tuesday, Cole threw 94 pitches on Sunday.

My guess is that you treat Friday just like you did Sunday, deciding between Cole or Chance to start and keeping the other ready to start Saturday if you lose on Friday...and knowing Jungmann is available in relief if you need him (where he has been so effective through two games thus far).

I'm tempted to start Cole on Friday...if you win with Green on Friday, you can have Ruffin ready to start Game 1 of the Championship series, Jungmann for a Game 2 and Green for a Game 3 if necessary...

...or you go with Green on Friday and you lose, you still have Ruffin on Saturday, Jungmann for Game 1 of the Championship series, and then who knows.

Regardless, this is an excellent situation to be in

I thought Ruffin would start game one but Augie is clearly not playing for one game, he is playing for the championship so I expect Green to start with Workman available early if he gets into trouble. That sets up Ruffin and Jungmann for Saturday or for the first two games of the championship series. We also havent seen the last of Mr. Wood. You really have to like how this staff sets up with the schedule though nothing is finished yet.

Not to get ahead of ourselve, but someone tell me about LSU and how their staff looks if they are forced to a decisive game 4 before making the Championship Series.

YeaTExas, I like the way you're thinking. I am also wondering the same thing, but about ASU. I'm pretty sure they used their #3 tonight against us. They should use their #2 against UNC, and they will amost certainly have to use their #1 against us again, but since he pitched about 80 tonight he won't have much left. I'm guessing by the time Friday gets here we will probably see the #3 again also.

Definitely looks good for us, re: ASU. I don't have a clue about UNC.

no, the reliever who came in after the lefty, had a record of something like 7 and 2, I unmuted the sound to hear ESPN guessing that this was their number 3 guy. Since he didn't pitch too many pitches, I think we would see him again.

I am not a fan of the way the CWS works. It seems that we don't have much of an advantage pitching wise even though we are in the winners bracket. I know that other teams have to win three games in a row but because of the long breaks ASU and NC will probably have their one and two to go against us. There should be less time between games so that there is a real advantage to being in the winners bracket.

Don't get me wrong I love where we are but both of these teams have two great pitchers and we still have our work cut out for us.

Blair was supposedly their 2rd starter. I assume he would throw Thursday against UNC. UNC probably throws Moran tomorrow. Neither numbers-wise had a great option after that. I guess both would come back with their starter from their first meeting in the Friday game.

If Green starts Friday and we win, then we're ******* set. Ruffin and Jungmann would both have plenty of rest for the first two games of the championship series.

I expect Cole Green against North Carolina, but just a guess. The hangover effect from last night's game is likely to kill Arizona State, but we'll see. That was a very tough loss for them.

Mike Leake is their #1 starter, Josh Spence is their #2. We may very well see a rematch of Spence vs. Alex White tomorrow. Both of them threw a ton of pitches on Sunday (Spence about 120, White about 130), so I can't imagine either of them would be 100%, but one of those teams is going home. I can't see their coaches trying to predict the future and saving their best available guy for a potential game vs. Texas.

Either way, I think Texas is in pretty good shape. ASU and UNC may be forced to use the best arms they have on Thursday, while our guys get 2 days off. We could throw Green, Workman, or Dicharry on Friday and have some good arms in the bullpen for backup. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me to see Ruffin on Friday, although I think Augie would rather save him for game 1 of the championship series if he can. And if we get a win on Friday, we get 2 more days to rest and get our rotation set up for the final series. That's why it would be really great if someone could beat LSU and force them out of their natural rotation.

I am confused by the lack of consideration for Workman starting Friday. Why wouldn't you start him, leaving our best to get plenty of rest "just in case" for Saturday and potentially giving them off until Monday?

I was hoping Workman would get some time last night, and I would not be opposed to letting him start on Friday with a very short leash.

Workman has great stuff when he's on, but he's been horribly inconsistent and hasn't pitched since the regional final against Army, so he's not as trustworthy at this point as Green or even Dicharry, IMO.

Garrido said this afternoon that even starting Ruffin again was not off the table.

But he might be bluffing.

okay, so I read that little blog about Ruffin's shoulder being tender, and how he can't start again until Saturday at the earliest.

So let's take a look at this thing now. If you could assume you don't have Ruffin until Saturday or Monday.

On Friday, you start:

Workman or Dicharry? and I'm guessing you go with somebody who has pitched recently, Dicharry.

If you lose Friday, you pitch Ruffin Saturday.

If you win Friday, you start Green on Monday, Ruffin Tuesday, and if you lose one of those two, you start Jungmann on Wednesday.

Other options? I guess you could start Green Friday, and that way you would have him available on Tuesday at the earliest?

If you start Green Friday and win, then Ruffin or Jungmann starts Monday, then Green again on Tuesday.

I'm a little worried about Ruffin. If he's 100%, we've got to have the deepest pitching staff. If he gets hit hard again, we've still got plenty of options, maybe as many options as the other teams.

Bring your best available for every game and throw everything you have at them. Green is the best we got available so he should go.

Ruffin could then go on Saturday or Monday.

I would expect Green then Workman then Wood but what do I know. We do need to figure out how to win a game without Jungmann I believe.

Why does everyone think Austin Wood will start? I don't believe Augie would even consider starting Austin Wood unless he was the only pitcher we had available (i.e. Ruffin, Green, Jungmann, Dicharry, and Workman are all off the board). And I don't think we'd run into that scenario until Game 3 of the final series.

I expect to see Green tonight, and I expect a win, which would set up a rotation of Ruffin, Jungmann, Green for the final series.

If Green loses tonight, I'd expect to see Ruffin on Saturday, followed by a rotation of Jungmann, Dicharry/Workman, and then maybe a platoon of Green and Ruffin in game 3.

We have to have Austin Wood available as a closer. We won our last 2 national titles in large part because we had a dominant closer. LSU is a good offensive team, and we're going to need a reliable bullpen to beat them.

I'm with bass: I expect Green will start on a somewhat short leash. If he gets into trouble, my bet is Workman will be first out of the 'pen, followed by one of our Austins.

Even if Green is completely shutting down the Sun Devils, I don't imagine he'll go beyond six innings. But who knows? The dude is a gamer ... like the rest of our pitchers.

Looks like it would have to be Cole Green, although my predictions haven't been too good lately. With Ruffin's sore shoulder, I don't expect him to see the mound tonight.
Green/Workman if Green doesn't have it/Dicharry/Wood. That should get the job done.

Don't know who they were talking to, but ESPN Austin just interviewed someone in Omaha and everything is pointing to Green starting.
