fresh loam, grass thoughts

remodel is wrapping up, and they just scraped the area to remove concrete drippings, nails, etc. and covered it with loam. supposubly, there's a front coming in Wednsday.

would it be a total waste to lay down some (dormant) sod this weekend? what would be a better alternative, if so? there's enough slope in the area that I would probably lose all the new dirt if I don't get something down on it, pdq, assuming we get any significant rain.

Thanks,

I'm not an expert, but have been told that winter is a good time to put down sod. Because while it's dormant on top, the roots are growing and most of the plant's energy is focused on roots.

Thus when the spring comes good roots are established.

I was told this by a certain cowboy you know. He says the best time to put down sod is during a cold rain.

Sucks for the sod layers, but good for the sod.

If you're in Central Texas, they probably put down "sandy loam." The only good thing you can say about it is it's cheap and easy to spread. If at all possible, you need to improve it by blending in some amendments, in particular organic material. I'd stop by the Natural Gardener for their specific recommendation. Then, get it hauled in, spread it out, and till it in before putting down sod. Also, do your homework on the sod you choose based on your specific conditions and plans for the yard. Most importantly, how much sun exposure will the grass have now and in the future considering tree plans? BTW, now is also a great time to add any trees you may want. I would also highly recommend hiring a landscape architect to at least do an initial consultation on your yard. Shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks and can easily save far more than that if you can avoid a single planting mistake.
