Free Throws

I know there have been other threads. However to me I think this is the primary problem with this team. After each lose FTs are mentioned but then we also focus on the play of whoever had a poor game that night. Whether it be Pittman, or then James, or then Hamilton and Brown.

There will always be guys having off nights here or there. But the one consistent factor that has hurt the Horns this season is FREE THROWS.

K-state, L 62-71:
9-22 FTs (13 missed FTs, 9 in 2nd half)

UConn, L 74-88:
9-16 FTs (7 missed FTs, 6 in 2nd half)

Baylor, L 77-80:
19-31 FTs (12 missed FTs)

OU, L 71-80:
10-27 FTs (17 missed FTs)

K-state, Baylor, and OU are 3 games that Texas wins if they make more FTs. Somes the FT discrepancy has simply kept Texas too far back in games. Then it affects their play and decision making. If you are down 5 at a point in a game where you missed 10 FTs then that games would be completely different if you had made 6-7 of those misses.

I don't think they will fix the FT issue, but it may show improvement at some point. This one issue is going to continue to cost Texas games the remainder of the season and will keep them from going deep in the tournament.

Very frustrating to watch.

Would like to find some reason to disagree with the gloomy conclusion of the OP, but can't think of a legit reason to disagree.

The sad part is, free throws arent just something that you can "practice" and get better at. In fact, like the announcers were saying during the game, alot of times the more a poor free throw shooting team practices shooting free throws the worst they can get potentially because of how much they are thinking about it. The best comparison i have for this would be like a kicker in football. You practice doing it all day and you see it go through the uprights, but once your in the game and you start thinking too much you've already lost. And once you miss the 1st one your gonna be thinking about that for the rest of the game.

Agreed. Our inability to make penalty shots will prevent us from winning the Big-12 and prevent us from going beyond the third round in the NCAA tournament.

Are we now DEAD Last in the NCAA in FT shooting? Weren't we like #314 a few weeks back and we sure as **** haven't improved any.

Well, the Kansas game didn't show any improvement. We will do well to win a couple of games in the Big-12 tournament. I'm afraid we can forget about coming close to winning anything this year. Clearly, our performance is getting worse.

Some improvement last night over season average, but out of 334 teams, UT is sitting at 326 according to the NCAA stats site. May have improved some after last night, but for a program like this to be that far down is ridiculous!

I don't understand how10-27 is even possible. I'm pretty sure I never had a stretch of 10 of 27 FTs in my life and I was only average at it.

My 5yr old is over 80% and he's shooting with his off-hand. That's also with his 2 big brothers (7 and 9) waving their arms and jumping up and down like Cameron Crazies. MAKE A GOD DAMN FREE THROW!!

It seems like FT's are like golf. In golf, you can hit a lot of balls at the driving range. At the end of the day, it doesn't necessarily translate on the course. If you hit one bad shot and you start thinking about your form, you've lost. You go to the driving range to get a feel for your swing. But on the course, you have to learn to trust your swing and even the pro's hit bad shots. Well, unless you're Elin Nordgren.

In basketball, you have to trust your shot. If you're over analyzing your shot, you've already missed it before you pull the trigger. It's mental!

If you saw Syracuse last night, they won the game at the line going 23-28 for 82.1%. I don't think the last 5 FT's even touched the rim going in.

"One of the arguments often used by people is that those with the height cannot shoot for a decent percentage. For sh*ts and giggles I elected to look at what Griner was doing at Baylor (you know, their freshman who is somewhere between 6'8" and 6'9" depending on which sheet you look at). She is 108 of 154 on the season (.701). If a player who is STILL growing can hit at a 70% clip, why in the hell can the guys not hit at a pace that at least mirrors Griner? At this point in the season, I have to think Barnes would be thrilled with 70%..."

You know women use a smaller ball, so it is a bad comparison. A good comparison re: height is KD who is shooting high 80% and shoots 10-12 every game. It is all about committment to concentrating on the shot. Not worrying about it, but actually taking it seriously when working on the shot and routine. Then practicing doing that routine when winded, not when you are fresh, but after running and your legs are tired.

After Damion James does his dribbles and catches the ball he then starts his shooting motion down and then brings it up to shoot. That U shaped motion is the cause of his inaccuracy both left/right and long/short.

Proper alignment of the body can virtually nullify left/right issues of the free throw shot. Simplification of the stroke starting the shot motion with the ball already at shoulder height and shooting at a 66 degree arch with a firm followthrough will get you 66 percent or higher with little practice and much higher with more.

They should get a video of Larry Bird shooting FT. His motion was virtually effortless and very compact while starting high.

Having a FT motion that starts mid body, drops to just above your knees and then all the way up and out is too much room for error from a standing position.

Watch the guys who shoot FT the best. They all share commonalities.

It is sickening to watch the team shoot FT this year.
