Free antivirus program??

I need to dump Norton as it has taken over my computer... any suggestions on a good replacement which I can DL for ? I have fairly heavy internet traffic. Thanks

I can't speak to how well it protects your computer because I've never had a virus before. or maybe that means it works well. I currently use Norton, but the free trial period is almost up so I will probably switch to a free program as well.

I have had good luck w/ the AVG free package. Two friends as well as one who does some hacking suggested it.

I also second the AVG free edition (grisoft.com). I've had Norton and McAfee forever and AVG is just as good - and it's free. Anti-virus programs are kindergarten stuff anyways - that's not the real threat out there anymore.

I got the new microsoft one and it cleaned everything. It does slow things down a little if you have it running all the time. I got it for free off of microsoft.com.

That's a spyware cleaner, not an anti-virus program. Big difference.

i have norton 2005, it's really good. i too did not pay for this program, doubt i actually would.
