Fred Thompson drops out of the race

It's on cnn.com and msnbc.com now.

Not suprising though. Maybe he can demote Jack McCoy and get back to running the NYC DA's office.

His withdrawal statement was all of three sentences.

Regardless, we're going to get who (and what) we deserve in this upcoming election.

God bless ya, Sen. Thompson.

I think Huckabee is the beneficiary of Thompson's withdrawl.

Former Tennessee U. S. Senator Fred Thompson won the straw poll conducted at the Saturday, January 19th meeting of the Madison County Republican Men’s Club.

The straw poll was not announced in advance and involved only those persons who normally attend a monthly meeting of the club.

Voting was by secret ballot and 199 of the attendees participated. Results were as follows:

1. Fred Thompson received 70 votes or 35.2% of the votes

2. Mitt Romney received 35 votes or 17.6% of the votes

3. John McCain received 25 votes or 12.6% of the votes

4. Mike Huckabee received 24 votes or 12.1% of the votes

5. Rudy Guiliani received 13 votes or 6.5% of the votes

6. Ron Paul received 11 votes or 5.5% of the votes

Undecided received 15 votes or 7.5% of the votes. Four other candidates received one or two votes each for a total of 6 votes and 3.0% of the votes.

The presidential preference primary will be held in Alabama on Tuesday, February 5th. The Republican ballot will contain the names of ten candidates plus undecided, although some of these candidates have already withdrawn from the race. The ten Republican candidates on the ballot in Alabama are Hugh Cort, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, and Fred Thompson.

------------------

Most people seem to be either Thompson/Huckabee types or Giuliani/Romney types. Among the hardcore Republicans in Alabama McCain is not popular (but he'll be my choice if Giuliani goes).

I hope Fred didn't get writer's cramp from that withdrawal speech.

Geez, that guy has to be the biggest disappointment of a candidate ever.

In the well of the Senate and on the set in Hollywood, he always had the reputation of being incredibly lazy. When it was time, he stood up, said his lines convinceingly and left.

Ditto his campaign. Although sorry to see another trophy wife leave the campaign trial.
