Fox Hound

This may have been discussed before, but can anyone tell me the story of when and why the Austin Fox & Hound closed? I just found out about it a few days ago. I can guess a few reasons why: Although they had one of the best sports-watching set-ups in the city, they seemed reluctant to market themselves as a sports bar. Their food and service was average, at best. And they seemed strangely indifferent to the locals, e.g., playing music during Longhorn basketball games, not wanting to show the Tour de France (at least the first few times Lance won it), and oblivious to the business they could have gotten during the World Cup if they had marketed themselves differently. It really was an awesome TV set-up, though, not a bad seat in the house.

i think alot of people (me included) where bitter about it replacing the very local and cool Waterloo Brew Pub. Mmm, used to love drinking the in-house beer they brewed there while sitting on the roof deck with friends.

Went to Waterloo over 100 times.

Went to Fox and Hound 0 times.

Yeah, i didn't really give it a chance. Aside from being turned off that it wasn't Waterloo, I am not a big "sports bar" kind of guy. Maybe it wasn't like all the other sports bars in town, i dunno.

I love sports though, just not sports bars so much.

Thanks 1990txgirl, I didn't even realize that Around Austin board existed (I obviously don't explore this site in depth).

what a shame. i love listening to kylie minogue videos blaring over the silence of a UT basketball broadcast. where else in austin will i be able to find that?

I still remember the Texas-Texas Tech game back in 2004. It was at Lubbock so a bunch of us went there to the roofdeck to watch the game. Little did we know they were planning on switching the TV's and sound over to the World Series once that came on. OK, I could maybe understand it if it was a Texas team in the Series, but I think it was the Yankees and Red Sox...really, who the **** cares in Austin when UT is playing?

It took a major fight from all the fans up there to keep the game and sound on.

I never went back after that.

I've read other posts about their tv's not being HD. Don't recall myself, but that was a big complaint, especially in comparison to Ringers.

They can't compete with Ringers.

I actually think the setup at Fox & Hound Austin is one of the worst of any of the F&H locations I have been to. There are too many tables too close to the TVs, if you get stuck there, you can't see everything at once.

All the F&H's need to get with the times and replace those big screens with HDTV.

i was at hte F/H in plano off 75 over break and was amazed at how i didn't see a single HDTV in the room i was in. its amazing how other sports bars are going to the flat screen TV per booth yet all they had was 5 ~50" regular biggies and a few 32" around the walls. talk about a ****** set up.

****** place to watch sports+incredibly high overhead=out of ******* business.

Some of you act like you're surprised. Do you not see the turnover in bars and restaurants in that area???

I don't think it was waterloo backlash. I honestly think it came down to their food and service. During games their food would take forever to arrive and it was not just bad, but HORRIBLE. You can't keep a bar open like that.

watched the opening round of the NCAA tourney during the beginning of the Iraq war and didn't get a single bite to eat despite ordering when I got there and sticking around for an hour and a half. The manager said he didn't expect to be that busy??? At that time, there was nothing downtown for watching the tourney except F&H.
