Four great leaders! (qbs)

We have had great quarterbacks but these four stand out because they did lead us to National Championships in football. They are as follows in order to time they played for UT.

1. Duke Carlisle - lead our 1963 to the NC. He not only was a good quarterback but an excellent defensive back who caught a last second interception that year to preserve a 7 - 0 win over Baylor. He was considered spectacular but he could run a little and pass a little but mainly do what was needed to win the games. He did play spectacular againt Navy in the Cotton Bowl throwing 2 td passes in a 28 to 6 win.

2. James Street - the great wishbone qb of our 1969 NC team. A great player who did what was needed to win. He never lost a game at UT as a starter.

3. Eddie Phillips - another great wishbone QB who led our 1970 NC team as awarded by the UPI. I know we lost the Cotton Bowl game to Notre Dame but had we not lost our great receiver Cotton Speyer I think we would have put up enough points with him playing to edge ND out.

4. Vince Young and I know everyone knows about him so no more comments necessary.

Honorable Mention:

I know I listed 4 but our 1963 third string Tommy Wade needs to be mentioned because he came into the 1963 A&M game with us trailing 13 to 9 with time running out. He had several close calls but he did move us down the field with his passing to set up the winning td and we escaped with a 15 to 13 win.

Honorable Mention
Randy McEachern...Came into the 77 OU game after our losing both Mark McBath and Jon Aune to season ending injuries. Helped us beat OU for the first time in something like 6 years. Too bad the fairy tale fell apart in the Cotton bowl loss to ND

James Brown - won 1st ever Big 12 Championship as a huge underdog and predicted it would happen - broke the long home winning streak held by the Aggies in Kyle with a bum ankle. Beat OU in first start with virtually no previous experience (I'll give an assist to Stonie C on this one).

I'll give another Honorable Mention:
Donnie Little...One of my alltime favorite horns. First black QB at Texas and took some heat. Was and is a class act.

unless time has seriously messed with my brain, I was under the impression James Brown never predicted we would win in '96.

He gave a response to a jerkoff reporter who asked him how he felt about the fact that Nebraska was a 3 TD favorite.

James responded along the lines of: "Well I dont think that line is going to be correct, who knows, maybe we MIGHT win by 3 TD's....." To which the idiot reporter said, "so you think you can win", and James (as you would EXPECT a guy to do) said, "yeah, I think we can win"

That statement somehow got completely mixed around, and suddenly hit the airwaves as " Texas Quarterback GUARANTEES 3 TD VICTORY!!!!!"

wtf.gif
not even close, and James sure as heck never used the words guarantee - he knew better than to throw up locker room fodder.

Yeah, I remember it being something like:

R: What do you think about facing Nebraska, a powerful team favored to beat you by 21 points?
JB: Who knows? Maybe we'll beat them by 21 points.
R: So you think you can win?
JB: Yeah, sure, we can win this one.

If it's about leadership and not just championships I would have to go with the following (recent era only):

James Brown: guys followed because he never gave up. Hurt ankle at aggy game, 1st Big XII championship, etc.

Major Applewhite: to me it seemed the team worked harder because they knew he would make something happen if they did. Saw it from the start when he entered the UCLA game as a freshman for the hurt Richard Walton.

Vince Young: enough said. They team would have followed him anywhere.

I would like to add Robert Brewer, who played in the early 80s as a walk-on and had a pretty impressive record as a starter. Robert brought Texas from behind to beat Alabama in the Cotton Bowl during his first year as a starter. A loss to highly ranked and well paid SMU kept us out of a nice bowl game the following year... we ended up in the Sun Bowl. When Robert had an injury in practice, it opened the door to Todd Dodge's first start in that Sun Bowl.

chance mock. for at least one game winning drive.

one of the best games i have ever seen in person is the 2003 game against texas tech. a vince young led texas team is up by 2 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, and then the lead turns into being down by 5 points with 2 minutes left. insert chance mock. the offense gets the ball with a little under 2 minutes left, and in less than a minute and a half, mock leads the horns down the field and throws the game winning touchdown pass. clutch.
