Coastal, especially southern, Florida is weird. On the one hand there are the wealthy snowbirds and retirees. They don't want taxes, and hate everybody. Then there is a poorer underclass. The wealthy create lots of labor jobs, but not a lot of well paying jobs. Except for the few people in skilled trades, there is basically no middle class.
The problem with much of southern Florida is that it is overrun with Yankees. We were in Boca Raton last summer and couldn't believe how rude people were. One night, we went to a restaurant... when we thanked our waiter, he doubled-back and asked us what we just said... we told him thank you, again. He then thanked us since he said he's used to being ordered around by customers rather than being treated civilly.
I have a good friend who packed up and moved to Ft. Myers just on a whim. sunny weather, good golf, etc... He was a stockbroker so could work from home.
He was back in Dallas a year later swearing if he could move further away from that hellhole he would. A former DA from Miami likened southern Fla. to a funnel.. a lot of the country's trash, con-artists, etc.. seem to end up down there.
Convenient airport that's close to downtown and the beach.
Nice beaches with easy access and plenty of parking.
Lots of nice hotels, restaurants, and bars to choose from.
Great weather.
I've been there twice recently to visit family and I really enjoyed it both times. There's a definite New York attitude, but if you don't let it ruin your day it's not a big deal.
I'm not aware of many places anymore that aren't crawling with strip malls.
