Where is the D League in terms of competition level. Is it better than the European leagues? I think not but don't really know. I think players that can't make it to the NBA will play in Europe and those that can't make it in Europe play in the D League. Is my assumption right?

I'd say the top European leagues are better than the D league in terms of quality of team play. However, more US players with hopes of eventually landing a spot in the NBA are in the D league than playing in Europe. Not yet ready for the NBA draftees go to the D league (e.g., C.J. Miles). Undrafted college seniors go where the pay is best. Top European leagues pay much better than the D league.
