The thread about Travis May's new job jogged an intent I'd forgotten to track down. I was curious how Jalie Mitchell had done her first year at North Texas. The year before she arrived, they were 5-24. This year, they went 11-19. An article I read sounded like the blueprint used to revive the Horns....stingy defense and fast break offense.

I was curious about any mention of Nekia Jones playing next year. She followed Jalie to N.Texas after last year. Sadly, I couldn't find any mention of her on the roster.

Google shows that she transferred after the Christmas break from NT to Louisiana-Laffeyette. Hmmmm, curious. I hope she finds happiness. I had hoped for great things from her this year (as a Longhorn), and was sad to see her go.

Jalie also got UNT's first ever win vs a ranked opponent when the Mean Green beat #17 OU in November.

Crazy to hear about Nekia. I never thought she was a fit for what Coach Aston seems to be aiming for - a lot of high level athletes playing up tempo, high pressure basketball on both ends of the floor - but I hadn't heard about the second transfer.

I liked her for four skills she had:
1) she had this wicked head fake she would give as she drove to the basket (no one thought anyone that big could suddenly sprint through the hole left by the fake)

2) occasionally, she would inbound a ball by launching it the length of the court to a waiting player on the other end, while everyone went "Whaaa?" that was guarding the other players. This was due to her shot put experience.

3) Nobody was going to move her when she was under the basket going for a rebound.

4) Her sweet three-point shots

However, I think her weight was a factor in her playing time and other health issues she experienced that kept her on the bench. I'd always hoped that she would stay and work with the nutritionist to lower her weight to have more stamina. I could see the difference between her first and second year. I also suspect there was a family reason to be home closer to Beaumont, but that would be pure speculation.
