Then Jesus took his disciples up the mountain and gathering them around him, he taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are the meek.
Blessed are they that mourn.
Blessed are the merciful.
Blessed are they that thirst for justice.
Blessed are you when you are persecuted.
Blessed are you when you suffer.
Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is great in Heaven."

Then Simon Peter said, "Are we supposed to know this?"
And Andrew said, "Do we have to write this down?"
And James said, "Will we have a test on this?"
And Philip said, "Does this count?"
And Bartholomew said, "Do we have to hand this in?"
And John said, "The other disciples didn't have to do this!"
And Matthew said, "Can I go to the toilet?"
And Judas said, "What does this have to do with real life?"

Then one of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus' Lesson Plan and enquired of Jesus,
"Where is your anticipatory set and where are your objectives in the cognitive domain?"

And Jesus wept.

A question for my fellow teachers:

What empirical research demonstrates that using differentiated instruction, or learning styles, or multiple intelligences actually works in the classroom?

Mad respect for whoever can point me to that research data.

Year number 3 for me. Ive been working 10 hour days and we are weeks away from the kiddos even showing up.

kind of like in the business world--- you choose your boss and let your results defend your teaching strategy

I must have pissed someone off--this year they gave me the smart kids

dont you people just repeat the same lesson plans every year? i mean c'mon, we didnt want to be there either and we didnt get paid.

My rant today after sitting through 8 hours of inservice for Dept Chairs - why do presenters never use the strategies they are trying to teach? They just talk at us. We had MORE Diff Instr today as well. I think this is the third year of that, but all it really is is just good teaching practices. They need to think of a name for it, so they can tell the bad teachers what they need to do.

The sad thing today was that our district paid these so called experts from a national organization to come in and present. The woman that did ours, gave us a 15 page PPT handout, and proceeded to read each slide to us and then have 10 sec discussions about each slide. The keynote speaker, also from the same orzanization talked for a little over an hour. In the first 20-25 minutes of her talk she not once mentioned Diff Instr. OTOH we learned all about her family nad why she became a principal etc. When she finally mentioned Diff Instr it was only in generalities and to say we would talk more in depth in our breakout sessions.

My daughter would love to be going into a school. Graduated UT Liberal Arts Honors in English with a 4.0. Taught 2 summers with Breakthrough and can't find a job.

If any of you English teachers are getting rid of your jobs, let me know........

That's a real shame, Horn. In 32 years of teaching I knew several English teachers whose idea of "studying Romeo and Juliet" was watching the movie.

I'm about to go back to school, as a "displaced house wife" and was planning on doing special ed. Maybe I should reconsider. You guys make it sound pretty bleak.

Teachers. First - Thank you!

So let’s say you don’t want to teach the way the admins tell... If you follow your own training and intuition, will they fire you? Aren’t you guys pretty safe to run the class the way you see fit?

Yes, I can say w/o a doubt that I would be fired. I am told everything from how to set up my room to what to teach. I am told exactly where to put my f'n word wall, etc. One lady did her own thing last year and isnt back this year.

Entering year 28 this year and still having fun with the job! As Coelacanth said, the teaching is fun, it is the inservice that is a pain in the butt. This week I am always reminded of the joke someone told me years ago.

St Peter was showing new arrivals around heaven. The first room they stopped at was beautiful, nice plush carpet, fancy fixtures, nice food. Lots of men and women there, all talking and having a good time. He explained that this room was for doctors and nurses, since they devote their lives to helping people they have a special room.

The next room was a bit nicer still, better food, upgrades in all the amenities. Again several men and women were walking around talking etc. St Peter explained that this room was for policemen and firefighters. They too provide a great service to mankind and thus deserve a special place.

The last room was the most beautiful of all. Exotic foods, gold fixtures, the plushest carpets and softest sofas etc. But the room was empty. St Peter explained that this room was reserved for teachers, for surely no one else gives so much for so little in return. One new arrival mentioned that his teachers were always were always kind and good and wondered why the room was empty. "Well,"
St Peter replied, "they are all down in hell deoing inservice this week."

Yeah - teaching is great. The difficulties are usually from outside of our control. But I love the job.

100% for sure on the other teacher. It wasnt only that she didnt follow the admins directions, she also sucked at her job in general. We were told in January that she wouldnt be coming back the next year.

I also would like to say that most of the things that they are making me do are annoying but wont hurt the kids in any way. They cause me to work 12 hour days so I hate them. If they were asking me to do things that I knew were going to hurt the development of the kiddos it would be a different story.

So, Ill just keep going with the flow and bitching on the internet.
