For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

1. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame: Best resume in the country for a coach who hasn’t won a national championship.

But ...
in 11 years at Notre Dame, Brian Kelly has just 4 wins vs. Top 10 teams. (in 13 games)
Of those 4 Top 10 wins, one was against a #10 Michigan State team that finished the year unranked (7-6). Another was his overtime win this year, vs. Clemson w/o Trevor Lawrence.
His record vs the top 25 is 21-24

FWIW, Herman has 6 Top-10 wins in his time at UH and Texas.

Brian Kelly isn't the answer for Texas. All he has proven at the best known college football team in the world is he can beat up on the Group of 5 and lower Power 5 teams. He and ND deserve each other.

Matt Campbell would be my choice. He beats better teams with less talent, seems to have class, and is young and appears not to be head strong.

I also like what I have heard about Tony Elliott.

If we can’t get the sure thing, let’s get the next best thing, not a retread.

Plus Kelly seems like he might be Irish......I mean, this is IT for him, the mountain top etc etc....

Poms,

You don't like a coach who claps when his star WRs come off the field and knock down the position coaches because they are mad at the choice of QB?

My guess is that Campbell will stay or will be money whipped by some other team before we get around to talking to him. If we don't have our guy reasonably within our grasp already, I think we will reach a point where TH is the best we can do.

One thing about ND is that they really do have higher admission standards for football players. For example, all players must have taken calculus and must be able to pass a related test. Their admission requirements might not be as high as Stanford or Rice, they are higher than just about any other P5 program you can think of - including UT, UVA and Michigan. So it's a mixed bag for them, they have this unique name recognition and historical advantage on the one hand, but then have this somewhat unique disadvantage on the other.

Rumor that Sark will be making an announcement in the next day or two
Here is an article on him -- Stopped drinking completely
No outrunning his past, Alabama's Steve Sarkisian ready for another head-coaching job

This is about Sark but they mention Bryce Young, who was the #1 overall player in the 2020 class - a 5-star QB who, of course, committed to Alabama. He did not redshirt, playing in 7 games

But would this job send him back to the bottle?

That’s a valid question. His drinking problem was very serious. All I know about, is he showed up to a USC game drunk to the point he couldn’t coach the game. How long was he an alcoholic? How long sober? I would think he would be required to go to AA mtgs as part of his contract. I tell you what. I know some great men who are recovering alcoholics. If he is serious about his sobriety, hire him! Everyone deserves a second chance!

There were multiple public functions where he was there specifically representing the school, and he was observably under the influence, slurring words, glazed eyes, nonsensical statements. People began making recordings. He gave USC no choice. He lost his wife sometime back then too (I think she was from Houston).
Now 5 years sober.
It would be a risky move, but from my perspective, we were already desperate before his name came up.

Have him pee in a cup once a month randomly for $5m per year.

I have been thinking of better ways to structure coach contracts lately.
Usually its in terms of a base salary plus performance incentives and/or targeted bonuses
With him, you almost have to have something in the contract to this effect. Probably not "pee in this cup or else" -- but something more artful in terms of contractual prose

He may not be a bad choice if his contract required an anti-drinking minister to follow him around 24 hrs/day.

Sober or not, he can coach circles around Herman. His offenses utilizes their strengths. Unlike Herman, who tries to have Sam throw deep outs, which is his weakness, plus the fact our OL can't block a pass rush.
