What possible reason could there be for not already having fired Herman if it's Meyer? Recruiting? Why saddle Meyer with a bunch of guys he wouldn't have offered in the first place? Hiring Meyer prior.to NSD1 would have been highly beneficial. The buyout? If the money is available now it was also there 2 weeks ago. Allowing Herman's agent finding him a soft landing place? Damn unlikely.
There are some reasons IMHO, some of which you have mentioned:
> Wait until the end of the season. Accomplished, and CDC still hasn’t pulled the trigger. But the optics at Texas are a big deal. Many schools don’t care. Of course, this doesn’t explain why he is still employed.
> Soft landing? I think it could be more of a “let’s mitigate our financial exposure” thought process, assuming someone will offer Herman.
> Meyer has his heart set on some
coordinators that are currently constrained because of the CFP.
>
Meyer himself. He wants to come but is conflicted, primarily because to do so would force going against the wishes of his family. The way I see it though, Meyer will win that argument.
> Meyer is a done deal but for reasons alluded to above, he didn’t not want to pull the trigger, yet. That delay, if true, really hurt our recruiting efforts. But, in the big picture, perhaps it’s a price worth paying.
I wanted Herman fired weeks ago with the hope that we could put the new HC, hopefully UM, in place early, for recruiting. But if CDC didn’t have Meyer in the fold then (for whatever reason), the delay — with which I disagreed — makes more sense.
I believe that Auburn’s firing of Malzahn, and taking the 21 mil hit, changed the calculus because it made Texas look, well, cheap.
