Since there is absolutely no basketball news coming from any of the recruiting sites I was wondering if you knew if anyone of note made it in for the elite camp last week?
From my understanding UT is not hosting an Elite Camp this year. The new NCAA rule that Universities can not hire AAU coaches or HS coaches that are associated with recruits made it too hard for them to bring in the type of talent they usually attract.
I was told that instead they were going to try to have as many recruits as possible in for unofficial visits. The Harrison twins, and probably Griffin and Shaq Cleare, were up a few weeks ago according to Rivals. Not sure who else they have had up.
I can give you some of my observations from John Lucas' SWIC from earlier this week. I didn't watch anyone at great length, and I can only comment on the guys that I could identify and the guys that I watched, but some of the guys that we are looking at were there.
2011- McClellan is every bit of 6'5 and long and smooth. He was very good in the games and didn't play lazy or uninterested. Showed why he is one of the best players in Texas.
2011- Rasheed Sulomain played on Sheldon's team which I liked. They seemed to have good chemistry and were joking with each other often. He's probably a legit 6'2, but he has really long arms. He's a good shooter and scorer.
2012- Cameron Ridley 6'10 with good size. He will be a pro. He's still working on his skills, but his footwork is decent and his upside is amazing. If we don't land Austin I would not lose sleep if we ended up with Ridley. He's not the shooter or shot blocker that Austin is, but he is better around the basket and more of a true center.
2012- Shaq Cleare 6'8/6'9 Center. He made a lot of mid-range jumpers and really clears out space around the rim. He's a more mobile, slender, and athletic Pittman, He has a nice right handed hook also. Not the shot blocker that Austin or Ridley are, but he can play.
2013- Andrew (I think) Harrison One of the twins didn't play due to injury. The one that plays point is the one that played. I loved that he made good decisions and found his open teammates. This was huge at this camp because most of the guards took terrible shots and didn't give up the rock. It was also impressive because when he wanted to score he did, so he easily could have just put on a show scoring wise. Both twins are a legit 6'4.
2013- Derrick Griffin was really impressive. His offense has some room for improvement but he dominated at times with his defense and rebounding. He played extremely hard and really fought for every rebound. He had some amazing blocks in transition and from the weak side. Offensively he scored off rebounds, dunks in transition, and showed a good shot. He's 6'7, but REALLY long. He reminds me of a Damion James-Gary Johnson mixture due to his height, motor, athleticism, and offensive game.
2014- Justin Jackson He just reclassified to the 2014 class because he is homeschooled and has actually been playing a class higher than his age. He can stroke it! His body is very thin and weak, but he is 6'5 and long. Defense will come as his body matures and he learns how to use his length. Will be one of the top players in this class.
I'm sure I missed someone but those are the guys off the top of my head.
That sucks about not being able to host the camps. I remember that's what got the staff so excited about Lewis last year.
So are we basically going after (in 2012) Austin; one of Sulaimon, Rose, and Reese; one of Ridley and Cleare; and then take a shot at Shabazz/Bail?
I don't understand why the guys at March to March are so high on Rose (they said he's the best PG in the country regardless of class), but he's falling drastically in the rankings. Could that be due to his injury?
Wish list for each class would be:
2011
SF: LeBryan Nash
C: Rakeem Christmas
2012
PG: L.J. Rose
SF: Shabazz Muhammad
PF: Cameron Ridley
C: Isaiah Austin
2013
PG: Andrew Harrison
SG: Aaron Harrison
SG: Keith Frazier
SF: Derrick Griffin
PF: Julius Randle
Eh, we could play two bigs any way in college. Especially as multi-faceted as Austin in as well as other guys we are bringing in like Daniels (assuming he stays two years). We need as many big men as we can. We could literally have ONE on the team in 2012, assuming we get Austin and Thompson goes pro (and we don't add another in 2011 or he goes pro).
How was the SWIC this year? I had every intention of making it to at least a few hours of the first day, but had to much to do around the house. Did you go the second day? I understand there was a good turnout from coaches.
A few years ago I sat next to Bill White. Del Harris was there as well one year, maybe the same year. Both guys were watching their sons.
It was good. There was a lot of talent there, but probably not as good as last year. There were a lot of guys from Houston not there: Bail, Carey, Reese, Lewis, DJ Griggs, etc.
There were a lot of coaches, but not like last year. I did see Clyde Drexler. Idk if he has a son or not.
Sulaimon and Rose weren't there? How did Bail look? He's absolutely exploded on Rivals and ESPN. The way they describe him, he seems a lot like Quincy Miller/DeAndre Daniels.
From everything I can gather off the internets, these 2011 big men are still mentioning Texas...but it's hard to say who we are really after:
6-9 Rakeem Christmas
6-8 Kadeem Jack...recently listed us
6-9 Amir Williams
6-8 Norvel Pelle
6-9 Kevin Johnson
6-9 Adjehi Baru
6-9 Forrest Robinson...he's the only guy from in-state that is mentioning Texas.
Guys like Mike Shaw, Chase Behanan, Thomas Gibson, Cannen Cunningham; all listed Texas in the past, but in the past 2-3 weeks didn't mention Texas at all in their updates.
6-8 forward Jonathan Holmes out of San Antonio has seen his stock rise big time with his play at the GASO events, but he hasn't mentioned Texas either.
Definitely don't want to forget about Wiltjer, who showed amazing shooting skills in the FIBA tournament for Canada, but he didn't show much in the way of paint control.
70% on three pointers? Outrebounded by Myck Kabongo?
Wiltjer definitely has a lot of talent. It just doesn't seem to be talent that would have him playing as a strong interior player.
Of course, a guy who could play for four years like Atchley did as a junior, but with 90% ft shooting would be hugely valuable to anyone. We'd miss the shot blocking, though.
Wiltjer is #6 in this clip. I really like the opening sequence in which he is helping bring the ball up against the press, passes out well before the trap can close on him, runs down the court to his spot, takes the pass and hits the three while the camera man reacts to the inevitable by saying "oh, ****" when Wiltjer loads up to shoot.
But you also see he isn't fleet at all going down the court, he doesn't really elevate in going for rebounds, and his role on the team seemed to be just to float on the perimeter on offense. It's only a minute clip, but you get a pretty good feel of his strengths and weaknesses.
I didn't list Wiltjer because he hasn't listed Texas is the last 4-5 updates from various sites over the last month. And he doesn't show an offer from us either....but that's not to say we aren't recruiting him. We might be, but the word "Texas" isn't coming out of his mouth in the latest interviews.
Sulaimon was there and played on the same squad as McClellan. Rose and Bail were not there.
The staff likes Forrest Robinson, but it's hard for teams to get a great read on him because he hasn't had a lot of AAU experience and he plays at a 2A High School. He was pretty skilled, for a face up PF, last summer when I saw him at the Elite Camp, but he wasn't much of a banger. He's also pretty skinny.
There will be other names after the July evaluation period. I'm not that worried about it because we aren't at these events looking for back court players, so all the coaches are doing is scouting big men and underclassmen. That should help us identify who we want and then go after them hard.
I would love to add Wiltjer if we had a good center to put with him. Maybe that's Thompson for a year, or maybe Christmas. With the way he shoots, it would be hard for guys to defend us.
