Football and alcohol

I learned about football in the 80s, so I guess I'm probably in the lower-middle of the road in terms of age among the posters on this board. I drink on occasion, but not at sporting events. In general, I'm curious to find out what fans think about drinking before/during football games.

Is there some dimension that is added to the football watching experience with alcohol? I've seen a lot of news updates and posts about Reliant selling alcohol, or the Big XII CCG selling alcohol, or the club suites at DKR selling alcohol, and I feel like there's some other thing I'm missing about the game.

Is it about the 5 senses? Things "seem" better at a game?

Is it about the volume level that you can create when slightly tipsy, compared to having no drinks?

Does it make the football game better in some way? Like time seems to speed up so that after incomplete passes, there's less waiting?

I'm wondering what other posters think. I guess I could go and have a few before the next game, but I'd like to hear what other people have to say about this situation. I think that if I were to drink some, my understanding of what was happening on the field wouldn't be as quick, or maybe I would need to go to the restroom more often, missing some of the game. I don't know... maybe I am just dull and need the "game" as my experience, when compared to others who take in other aspects of the game like socializing. Whatever.

I normally have a few drinks at our tailgate to be social before the game or at the Ex Center. It doesnt affect my enjoyment of the game. The last few years we are usually up a few TD's by the first half because of the weak schedule we play making the game more unwatchable as we beat the crap out of some kids that are there because their school wanted to collect 500k. I'm drinking for them.

The guys behind where we used to sit were wasted when they came in and got drunker during every game. Nice guys, but routinely spilled drinks, mustard and goodness knows what else on us. Have a drink or two at the tailgate, if you want, but keep it under control.

Beer makes things more fun but I have to be careful for the night games as it is easy to drink a few too many during a day-long tailgate party.
There is definitely a line I don't want to cross.

Ok....To answer your question: Here's a glance at my Gameday Stadium Uniform:

THE BEER HELMET

For starters, gotta keep the sun off my baldspot. So I might as well have a hat that's multi-functional. Slap a Longhorn sticker on this one and I'm good to go!

THE BEER BELLY

Strap it on tight and fill it full to cut down on the sloshing! Beer is good....but BOOZE IS BETTER!

During my four years I only got drunk or tipsy 3-4 times. Two were at OU games were I find as an introvert, are better when I get drunk so I can scream my *** off. One was at a Rice day-game, which was 1000% better because it makes the second half tolerable when we are up big. The last was in College Station which actually sucked because I had to piss every 30 minutes by the 2nd half, and going to the bathroom during drives is a major downer.

To sum it up: drink heavily during crappy games, moderately during good games, and limit your drinking during outstanding games so you don't have to miss a minute of the action. And drink as you see fit during the OU games so that you can match the intensity of everyone else in the stadium.

I don't drink DURING the game, unless I'm lucky enough to be up in the club section but that is few and far between.

BEFORE game though I'd say I go through about 8-10 Coors Lights or more depending on the heat & other factors, maybe a diet coke or two and some water. If I drink TOO MUCH though, I have to pee for much of the first quarter and I don't like doing that.

After four hours in the Stadium and a hot dog, water, and diet coke it's about time for another beer or four depending on what time of day the game started. If it's a night game I'm pretty ready to go home, day game though.....I like to watch some of the other games.

I prefer to watch the game sober. Being wasted makes it a lot harder to understand and enjoy. If anything, maybe a drink at the end of the game to celebrate a win.

Alcohol is relaxing.

It makes you care less about things that suck, like heat, standing for a long time, and people that you may otherwise find annoying... you'll end up high-fiving them the whole game instead!

It's the same reason you ever drink!

This is a very weird thread. Virtually everyone I know gets drunk, not just buzzed for the football games. This is due to the fact that being drunk is fun.

Some of the most fun times I have had on this earth I can admit, I have been buzzed, drunk or wasted for.
1) I have yet to see Metallica play live while I am sober (I have seen Metallica 6 times)

2) I was Hammered when VY crossed the goal line on 4th and 5 ,,,and other than my daughters birth, it still stands as one of if not the greatest memory I have.

And to clarify, when I say that we're drunk, I'm referring to us having ice shot blocks set up all day, several kegs, 20 cases, a margarita machine, 500 jello shots and a.....

JAGER MACHINE going.

Start time for a 2:30 game? 7:30 AM.
Start time for a 7:00 night game? 7:30 AM.

OP: You could have saved a lot of typing with:

"I don't drink before games and you're all wrong for doing it."

I drink some beforehand, but I want to watch the game rather than spend my time standing in line for the pisser. I spend way too much money on tickets to have my time at the game reduced because of nature's call.

So, beer beforehand at a slow pace, yes. (And Pinosas!) But water starting a good hour and a half before the game, so my clarity can be full and my bladder can be empty while inside the stadium.
