Fooled Me ...

I admit that of all the people I know I am the most likely to believe an interesting story.

I remember telling my daughter about "The tribe that Hides" a primitive race in the Philippenes learning about the modern world. I remembered the story from a documentary I watched in high school. I was fascinated that the tribesmen marveled when they saw farmers using an ox to pull a cart, but hardly thought twice about seeing a jet fly overhead. She let me know that that story was one of the great hoaxes in history.

I've also retold a story I seem to remember from one of Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" about Leland Stanford and his wife being rudely treated by the President of Harvard Universtiy when they sought to make a donation in the memory of their son who attended -- then instead using the money to start Stanford Universtiy. Alas, another urban legend.

Does anybody else fall for these stories or am I the only one?

I remember the story about the primitive tribe. I hadn't heard it was a hoax. That's back in the days when the great fraud Eric Van Danniken was peddling his bs about "Chariots of the Gods."

I wonder if it's hard to float a big hoax nowadays.

I have a couple of friends that fall for some really stupid ****.

Now that we've got the internets (especially snopes in this area) there really isn't a reason to fall for the stuff that doesn't pass the smell test.

That being said, a friend of mine and I fell for an ad in the Daily Texan. This was around 1996-97 and the ad said we could make money stuff envelopes, as much as $3/envelope. Well we did the math and figured it was easy. We sent off for information, and they sent us this crappy packet talking about success stories, etc. It asked for us to send $12 and a self-addressed stamped envelope for entry into the program.

Well, about 2 weeks later we got our own envelope back with a single page that basically said to do what they had just done to us...put ads in papers, get ppl to send you money, and then tell them to do the same thing. Needless to say we were disappointed and humiliated. Live and learn I guess....and I'm glad I learned on a $12 hoax rather than a $200,000+ one.

Yeah! Wow I believed in Chariots of the Gods and the Ancient Astronauts. Hook, line and sinker. Even did a speech on it for a class and got an A. the judge said "You speak as if you believe ..."
