Food Worker Strike

You really cannot fix stupid. The people are striking wanting more wages for basically no skills. It is a JOB not a CAREER. If you expect a living wage, improve your skills, education and most of all your ambition.

Notice the Houston contingent wrote their signs in Spanish.
The Link

If I am an owner of the franchise, I have new workers already.

There was a nearby country club whose food service workers decided they needed benefits that were traditionally not afforded to food service workers and went on strike. It literally went on for 2-3 years. Not sure how it settled, but once a week they would stand by the road and someone would bang a drum. After a while their numbers dwindled and they seemed quite a bit less spirited, kinda just sitting on the curb in front of the country club. I'm sure the time spent trying to squeeze money from a dying country club could have been spent getting better employment or getting the training that it would take to get a job where said benefits were customary.

$7.xx to $15.00 is a pretty stout jump. The cost would necessarily have to be passed on as a sizeable jump in prices which would affect the lower class greatly who relies on cheap fast food at times. Since when was it expected that you would be able to support yourself completely working at Burger King?

and the same people who ***** about welfare don't want to pay a living wage

**** the poor, huh?

damn Christian of you

these are the very people you should applaud and instead you have contempt for them

America wasn't founded so that we could all be better. America was founded so we could all be anything we damned well pleased.

**** the useless, not the poor. If they are older than 18, not in college, not disabled, then they get what they deserve. While some chose to do the basics in school, these people either chose not to or decided "**** it" when it came to applying themselves for something greater.

This version of poor is a choice. A choice nobody should subsidize through $10 Big Macs.

Wages are a function of bargaining power, not productivity. Wal-Mart workers are extremely productive and work at a pace that's beyond that of a number of highly compensated "professionals". Should people who work hard and productively roofing your house, checking out your groceries, gathering your garbage, cooking and processing your food necessarily forever suffer extreme poverty even when they work for extremely profitable businesses? It's hard, useful, necessary work and I think somebody should be compensated above minimum wage to do it. These people may not be exceptionally smart, but they aren't lazy.

I wouldn't say the job market is entirely fair or just but overall wages are set by many more variables than just working hard or efficiency. I want my surgeon to be smart, wise, compassionate, good w his/her hands, etc. I hope we value and pay for that. I dont really care how many hours they put in or how many surgeries they can complete in a day. Skill and unique talent differentiate many when it comes to wages.

I taught for 32 years, and saw many kids throw away their chance when they had free breakfast and lunch, a free education and teachers who were willing to help them. I was stopped at a light and saw a former student walking. I rolled down my window and said I'd give her a ride. When I asked her what she was doing, she said she was looking for a job - she had quit her last one. When I asked her why she quit, she said "they kept telling me what to do." I told her there probably weren't many, if any, jobs where no one told you what to do. I had really tried when she was my student to make her understand accountability, and even took her and 6 of her friends to Six Flags for a "bonding" experience. I'd like to think she has a job now that she can tolerate and is doing ok. But you can lead a fish to water, but you can't make them drink.

My point? A lot of the people who are not students and who are trying to live on what they make at beginning level jobs have made choices for years that left them in this situation. Unless they can see reasons to make better choices, I can't see them doing so. I heard that welfare recipients in NY can get more money than they would by working. What is the incentive for them to get a job?

And Paso, you really tick me off. What have you personally done, other than pay taxes, to help these people? I assume you have some skills that you could use to help people. Do you? Or do you just make snide remarks about conservatives? A teacher slogan is "Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." Even if you only help one or two people, you would be doing something other than demeaning others.

OK Deez: As a lawyer you have training in negotiations. Say it's your job to gain significant wage improvements for fast food workers and you approach take a professional approach like you would for a client who has means to pay you. What would be you opening request? How would that relate to what you would eventually consider to be a good outcome for your client?

You obviously have never heard of the Parabel of Talents.

God is not unhappy with the poor (e.g. lepers - and again, in our time folks like homeless disabled veterans or the physically handicapped)...just those that waste their talents.

so the poor are to blame ...

got it

Jesus was big into folks getting rich too

I remember that part of the New Testament now (that special power church addendum)

something about a camel and an eye of a needle, right?

Deez is actually onto the problem although we differ on the solution. The problem is the government subsidizes minimum wage with food stamps and all sorts of programs that enable Wal-Mart to pay for **** while double soaking us.

My solution would be to charge Wal-Mart for all the benefits its employees suck off of us. And yes it might make things cost more at Wal-Mart, but what you don't get is we are paying for it one way or the other.

Of course, the "Christians" amongst you would just say the people are wasting their talents and should starve to death.

I know Jesus said this as he drove off in his A8.

You are presuming somebody is "screwing" them. That is ok, it is what gets liberals votes.

Fact is though, they are screwing themselves.

Show me a poor person working hard to make a better life and I'll do everything I can to help them along.

Show me a poor person sitting on their front porch doing nothing and drinking Schlitz all day demanding my money and they can look elsewhere.

If someone doesn't want to work for $8 hr then don't take the job and go look elsewhere.

How about these people screwing themselves, they were the ones sleeping through HS or smoking dope behind the gym. They had their chance and they pissed it away.

Look at what McDonald's is doing computerizing the whole operation, these jobs are a dying breed, yet they want more money for jobs that require no skills or education?

Then the liberal mouth starts in about how the right keeps the poor down, hell those people had a chance and still do, get an education, even a liberal one?

Hey Liberal Mouth you are so rich why don't you pay extra at these fast food restaurants?
