Foo Fighters

Wondered the same thing. Then I heard the same song on a commercial so it appears they have sold their song to the commercial Gods.

Yes. They get paid royalties just like every time you hear it on the radio.
There is some sort of rule that you have to play a certain amount of the song.
If you just play a few seconds then maybe no charge.

I think artists can even get away with a bar or two of a hit song, like Boston's More Than a Feeling" intro and not have to pay them.

Could be mistaken, but I heard that somewhere.

The songwriters get the royalties for any songs on radio/TV and concerts. The performers get their agreed share of the revenue intake for concerts and record sales.

Anyone who thinks they know how concert revenues are distributed needs to observe a concert settlement. It is a fight for every penny between the act and the venue despite a contract specifying the responsibility and shares. (The strangest fight is usually who pays for the condoms and the clean-up of the showers after the condom use.)
