Im taking the gf there tonight. Ive never been before but I know she has been once and liked it. Anything great on the menu that I should consider? What should I expect of the food and atmosphere?

Well, I'd go with:

Pescado Veracruzano, Pollo Pibil, Enchilidas Verdes, or Carne Asada a la Tampiquena, but it depends on what you like.

It's a bit pricey. I hope y'all have a good time. Eat well. It's not Tex-Mex but you probably know that.

Just make sure that your gf has a good time, and don't drink too much. The s-x will be better when you're done.

thewir real delicacy is that fungus stuff appetizer or something. it's suppsoed to be all some and rich.

don't wig out b/c it's fungus. mushrooms are too.

Anyone buy their cookbook yet? I was thinking about it, but I need to get a good tex-mex one first.

Had a great first experience tonight. The atmosphere was nice and the art was a nice touch. I had the enchiladas verdes with chicken. I thought it was good but im not sure that it was that much better than $10 enchiladas (these were $18). I guess I was paying for the atmosphere to a certain extent. I had a margarita that was on the small side but very good. For dessert we split crepas con cajeta. Best. Dessert. Ever. Sever was great as well. Overall i had a great time and will go back when I have $70 to blow on mexican food.

I like the food at fonda. I'm glad you had a good time and good meal.

Your post inspired me to go to Taqueria Jalisco on Koening around Woodrow or Grover. I also had enchiladas verdes, the #8, with flour tortillas, rice and beans of course, and some pretty good hot sauce. I spent $5.25 plus tax and tip (to go). It was pretty good. It was food.

I'm not criticizing your expense because you had a date and I ate alone. You kicked my ***.

Oh, and I drank a 16 oz. cheap beer as well which doesn't match your margarita. Peace.

Was there last night. The $50 rita is don julio tequila real and 100y GM. It was tasty. Ok, maybe not, but the $9 daddy rita straight up was pretty fine.

i haven't been in 1.5 yrs or so, but the south texas platter was great. venison, froglegs, sweetbreads, veggies, quail, and maybe rabbit (i might be getting some of these confused with a platter i had at hudson's on the bend, though).

That sounds more like Hudson's than Fonda. Hudson's will cook all of the Hill Country road kill that they can find.

Just kidding. Hudson's has good food but they do seem to cook just about anything that walks, jumps, flies, swims, slithers, or crawls.

went to fonda san miguel last night. i had a really good experience. had a really friendly waiter. everything that i had was good.

the chips and salsa were solid. the green sauce was alittle too limey, but was still really good.

started off with the queso. different than most of the queso that you order at most tex mex places. it is too thick for chips, so you scoop it in torillas(really good and fresh) and make little cheese tacos. could of had that as my meal and been satisfied.

i had the enchiladas suizas (sour cream sauce) with chicken and the gf had the enchiladas with the mole Poblano sauce with chicken. i liked mine alot more than hers. each bite was sour cream cheesey goodness. the chicken was also really good in the lada. hers was kind of a chocolatey sauce. was good, but not my cup of tea. a real unique taste. the rice and beans were good, but nothing special.

we each got the daddy margarita. might of been the best margarita that i have ever had. kind of expensive, but i think it was worth it.

i forgot the name of the desert we got, but it was a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a scoop of caramel, served with some kind of alcohol in a little glass to pour on it, and a little container of caramel. really good. might have been the best desert that i have ever had.

i definitly recommend this place to take a date, and will go back again once i get a job and start making money. the total bill with the tip for the two of us was $91.

The service and atmosphere couldn't be better, but I must confess I still find it to not be a great value. I believe an earlier poster wrote that the $18 enchiladas weren't any better than some $8 or $10 enchiladas. I could buy that. I ordered the steak tampiquena as is it one of my favourites. I was disappointed. I actually like the tampiquena here in Killeen at the local Taqueria better and it is $6.50 with 2 enchiladas, instead of over $30 with 1 enchilada. I actually perfer El Chile over Fonda San Miguel's and it is about half the price.

Yeh, it is over-rated.---- For those of us who grew up eating Tex-Mex, one of the great things was the plate always arrived at table very hot (from the oven). Not so, at Fonda San Miguel (not Tex-Mex, I know). It usually seems that they left it sitting on the counter for about ten minutes. I've sent food back to be heated more than once, but that can be extremely problematic on some occasions.

I have to say, though, that if you're making an evening of dinner and drinks, this is a most enjoyable place to be.

No offense, but if I am going to go to fonda san miguel, the last thing I want to eat on the menu are the enchiladas. Anyone know how much the brunch is these days?

^^^ seriously, i guess they just have the enchiladas on the menu to appease those who were expecting texmex. i believe the brunch is around $25 a person.
