Flower bed

Attempting to put a flower bed in the backyard.

Problem I have is what do I do with the grass I am removing?

I have a large area of yard that is not in as good of shape as some of the area I am removing. Can I take large pieces and lay it over the part that needs work, water it and hope the grass sets roots?

Also, anyone know why the garbage men would leave a trash can that had dirt and grass in it when the pick up everything else?

Sorry, no help but, I would like to expand on this question. What is the best way to cut said flower bed out of your yard?

What type of grass? I cut and move St. Augustine a lot. It turns out great, but is a lot of work. I have heard that you can rent a "sod-cutter" and that is the way to go, but I haven't had a large enough area to try it. I water the grass in the morning and use shovels to cut it into squares and dig up about 1" of soil under the grass. The squares are heavy and it is a lot of work, but give it a try.

What city are you in? Most won't ever take dirt, take yard clippings once a once, and only take grass clippings twice a year. You gotta hide the stuff in your regular trash and make sure that you don't put too much out at once or the can will be to heavy. Duh!i

I started by digging the grass out with a shovel. Will take quite a while. I have heard of a couple of other options.

One is to till the grass up, spay it with grass killer and let it sit for a week until grass is dead.

When we did this with our house, we cut the sod our in 1-1/2 foot squares about 2-3 inches deep. We then replanted them in weak areas of the lawn by digging a matching hole to set the sod in. Worked great.

What type of grass?? St. Augustine doesn't grow from seed, fyi.

You don't have to do anything to St. Augustine plugs or sections. Experts say not to fertilize a new lawn the first year for some reason. Just water, but if you are replacing areas in which the St. Augustine was weak in the first place (full sun or full shade), don't expect the new sod to take off.
