Any attorneys on the board know if such a beating can incur involuntary manslaughter charges? The beating acts were voluntary, inlcuding the victum who allowed himself to be hazed... yet he was more or less forced into it under peer pressure. Imagine a parent of a young man at a college, and that child is beaten to death to the extent his tissues were as damaged as they would have been under severe torture. To think your child died like that.

My greatest fear is that this will get pushed to the back of the collective conscience as a 'cultural thing', and not given the exposure and treatement that it should get. That would be truly, truly sad.

Gang initiations would probably be less brutal than this hazing. Awful.

IMHO, this band should be disbanded for as long as it takes for the collective memory of these types of 'initiations' to fade from the minds of future band members. No one currently even peripherally involved with the band now should ever be allowed to have any association with the band in its future form. And it's a shame, because this band was renowned for their style of marching and playing including a recent Super Bowl half time show.

Again, this plays into the "it's a cultural thing" justification that I fear will push this whole situation to the background. And don't overlook that the kid came from a high school with the same problem, and a situation where you get the feeling it was acceptable and made the band what they are.
