**** i am not really sure on either. i just know that at the end of the month i am going to be flown out to indonesia for work. the area that i am going to be working in is towards the center of the islands.
i guess one of the questions is am i gonna be stopping on the west coast?
Whether you hit the West Coast first or not certainly depends on the airline. Somtimes Continental flies over to Asia from Newark, so it can depend. American would likely route you from DFW to Tokyo, then switch you over to a partner airline.
If you have a choice, I would try to fly Singapore Air out of LAX. They should fly either direct to Singapore, then to Jakarta, or fly through Taipei, then Singapore, then Jakarta. Any extra stops would be well worth the trouble given the comfort of their Economy class versus any of the US Airlines..
Fly Cathay or Singapore from SFO to Hong Kong and then Indonesia. I do not think there are non-stops to Singapore from the West Coast. I believe the flight is too far.
Singapore Airlines has a non-stop 6 days a week from LAX to Singapore (or they did until recently). They also fly direct from Newark to Singapore.
The LAX flight is LOOOOONNNNNNNGGGG.
The business class seat (raffles) is excellent, if your company will spring for it. The entertainment system (Chrisworld) is excellent and in economy as well.
Stay off Garuda (or any Indonesian carrier.) You will probably have to fly from Jakarta to your work point, hopefully the company your company is working for will have a company plane (not that unusual there.)
The oil filelds in the interiors of Sumatra and Java are really nice places to work - better than being stuck in an office in Jakarta.
I couldnt believe there was a non stop direct from newark to singapore, so i looked up, its true 17 hours and 10 minutes. hahaha.. thats funny to me for some reason.
With regards to stops, depends on who you fly. I was working rotational in SE Asia for several years while we completed construction on a new semi. I have made the trip to Singapore from Houston with as little as one stop (LAX/SFO) and as many as 3 stops (Chicago, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur). If possible, heed the advice of several on this thread -fly to LAX and fly SIngapore Air to Singapore direct. If possible, take Singapore Air to Jakarta. That will be the most comfortable way to make the trip.
Coming home from your 30 day hitch will be fun if you can fly SIngapore Air. The trip is so long that we would get drunk, pass out, sober up (somewhat) and then get drunk agian before landing in Los Angeles. Good times with oilfield trash from 601 area code!!!!
