anyone know of any public ponds or anywhere else where there is some decent fishing around austin? I sure would like somewhere to go every now and then

I'm not sure about around Austin, however you can head down to the Brazos river and the Llano River and do some decent fishing there. Plus, it wouldn't be bad to stop in at Llano for some Cooper's BBQ.

Town Lake is actually quite full of huuuge bass. You definitely want to practice catch and release, though.
You can rent a canoe at Zilker Park. Red Bud island is a great spot.
Torpedo sized bass abound.

Do a web search for Central Texas white bass -- you'll find a bunch of articles about the rivers around here -- the Pedernales at Reimer's ranch, the Colorado up at Colorado Bend st. park, the San Gabriel above Granger lake, and my favorite spot, which I'm damn well not posting because there are already too many folks fishing there. And as a bonus, the white bass run is gearing up as we speak, and should run through April.

The Llano is a GREAT suggestion -- go to Coopers for a late lunch, then hit the Llano (any spot upstream about half an hour from Cooper's) to fish the evening. I fish it with fly gear and have a blast -- little poppers in the afternoon nail the sunnies (including Rio Grande perch -- real pretty), and a minnow imitation slays the bass. Last summer I landed 20+ bass in about an hour and a half, all pretty good size. They really turn on as the sun goes down. It's a great river.

Get Bud Priddy's book on fly fishing the Texas Hill Country and start driving around -- there are some great spots in there (on the Blanco, Colorado, Llano, etc.).

I second the San Gabriel river suggestion...good white bass fishing, especially right now. And nearby, Granger Lake is great for crappie fishing.

There's a lot of good information on the Texas Parks & Wildlife website.

As you probably know, the Lower Colorado River Authority operates the highland lakes (Travis, Austin, Buchanan, Inks, Marble Falls, LBJ), but you might find more info on the Highland Lakes website.

There are plenty of other lakes around Austin with public access areas...
Granger Lake: here or here
Lake Georgetown: here or here
Walter E. Long Lake (aka Decker Lake)
Lake Bastrop

Also, here's a Texas Fishing Report.

If you're into fly fishing, you might want to check out Austin Fly Fishers. And this article has some good information (even though it's a few years old), and it references Bud Priddy and his book.
