Fishing near Beaumont and Port Arthur

Hey all,

I will be in Beaumont next week for some work. I would like to take some gear and fish a little but I don't know the area at all.

That said, does anyone know of some places I can park and easily access some decent wading areas? Any recent fishing reports for that area?

Thanks.

I only know of two "wade fishing" areas. You can get a boat and go to Stutes Island, which separates the Intercoastal Canal from Sabine Lake.

Otherwise, take I-10 to Winnie and 124 on to Bolivar.

You can take 287 South to 73 in Port Arthur. Take 73 West to 82 (becomes MLK) over the Intercoastal to Pleasure Island. The old amusement area has parking on the water - no wade fishing, but you can fish off the bulkhead.

Other option is to continue on east on 82 into Louisiana. Rarely anyone at Johnson's Bayou ro Holly Beach.

For freshwater, take 96 north to Silsbee, then 92 north to 190. Turn right across lake to east side of lake. Fishing near bridge is frequently pretty good, but you're looking at perch, brim, etc, about the size of your hand.

There really aren't any easy access wade fishing spots this time of year. And needless to say, Bolivar Peninsula and the surrounding inland fisheries, and in particular, Rollover Pass, are still a complete mess from Hurricane Ike.

But for possible impact from the Hurricane, the best bet would have been Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge along the North Shoreline of East Galveston Bay. I guess you can call them and see if they are open, but I'd imagine all of their roads and shoreline were completely destroyed by Ike.

If you are dead set on soaking a line, you might try the Pleasure Island Levee near Port Arthur. You can actually drive its entire length, and fish from it, in Sabine Lake (or at least you could before Ike....don't actually know if that is the case now). It runs along the Northwest edge of Sabine Lake, and you might snag a redfish or black drum.

Unfortunately, its a little early for prime wade fishing in our area, and even more unfortunately, almost all of the areas accessible wadefishing areas are still in very bad shape due to Ike.

If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know.
