First visit to Austin in a while...

Next weekend will be my first trip back to Austin in several years and I need a little help getting my bearings. It is a bachelor party with several people that have never been to Austin. I want to give them the Austin experience but I probably need a little help.

I assume at almost 30 I am not too old to go to Old 6th. I know West 6th is the new (aka graduates with money) area but I want to go visit my old watering holes.

At some point I need to show the newbies some water. I am between Hula Hut and Oasis. Thought or other suggestions?

Also just saw that Katz closed. That sucks. Where do people go for 2 am food now? Please tell me I don't have to go back to Taco C

Any thoughts are appreciated

Oasis is sort of like a factory now and a tourist trap. Hula Hut is the same as it was and a place I'd be more likely to take visitors. Also, Lake Travis has pretty much gone back to being the Colorado River with high limestone banks.

I never did much on 6th Street, so I can't help much there.

South Congress (SoCo) and the Rainey St neighborhood.

East 6th just east of I-35 is getting gentrified, but some interesting new places. "Old" East 6th has become real trashy, but everyone has heard abt it and might be good for your nostalgia tour.

Lake Travis from the Oasis is a sad view (now at its 4th lowest level ever) but it is a tradition with some. The Butt Hut is still the same.

Have fun and welcome back.

I also can't help you with 6th street.

I just wanted to put a plug in for the Oasis. Yes, I know the food isn't too good and the view is currently poor due to Lake Travis being low. But, in my experience, most everyone likes it the first time they go there. Good for your newbies.

There are people that like to sucker punch others just because. They run away. They literally punch you and run away. It's not like it happens every night or anything like that but enough. A friend of mine who worked the downtown sector up until a few weeks ago highly suggests not going down there later in the night if at all. Do not hang out when the bars close. That's when a lot of random fights happen for dumb reasons.

Show them Sixth around 11 or so before it gets too crowded but enough for them to get the idea.

I suggest leaving the memories of your favorite watering holes just that, memories. Nothing good can come of going back unless everything goes perfect. This will change, that will have changed and it won't be as good as your memory tells you it was. Leave them be. Trust me. Make new memories.
