Chris Warren is listed as not coming, but his mom had apparently told 247 that he will make some unofficial visits, and is skipping the junior day only because they know that is more like a hoopla. They would rather come separately and get to know things better. That's all. He's interested, and the parents want to make sure of academic support facilities... I shouldn't steal more stuff from 247 on what she said. (You all can get a subscription. They do a good job, and it's worth it. Just skip the crazies who post and look for what the staff posts. Ok, Let me do that plug, for stealing stuff from there
)
By the way, it seems that a lot of recruits are talking about our academic support not being up to par. Warren's mom said she wanted to make sure of that, for instance. The Teuhemas had said that LSU's academic support was a big factor in the end for Sione committing there.
When the recruits talk about "academics", everybody here would say, "LSU and us, on academics? Come on!" ... That is missing the point. It is not the academic rankings that the recruits worry about. It's about graduating and getting the help in doing that.
We need to really do something on a war-footing to improve this. With Mack Brown, all he needed was to say his "Y'all come; it's me here, don't worry". That worked all the way till last year and then even Mack struggled. And now, Mack is not there. Belmont needs to help Charlie set this thing right immediately.
Charlie can mention his graduation improvement record at UL, (which by the way is simply unbelievable - an almost unheard-of 90 players out of 95 graduating, while it was like 50% when he got there). But that was at UL. Texas needs to help him put stuff in place right away, to make sure that these recruits feel comfortable about academic support. It's a critical item to handle, because the recruits keep mentioning that as a problem at UT.
I thought UT had an excellent academic support system with tutors, computers, study areas, tremendous facilities, counselors, directors and so forth. I can't imagine what something better consists of short of clones to take the tests.
^^^ That's what I thought too. But we did hear this from a few recruits; so whatever it is that we have to do, we need to. Sometimes these are small things, but in these wired social media times, kids can make a big deal of small things too. Some small things probably didn't matter when the big name "Mack" was there to counter it. But it could hurt us now. So, stuff that needs to be fixed, should be fixed.
There may also be other things like our social media presence, facilitating recruit-to-recruit and recruit-to-player communication etc, which some say need an upgrade, when compared to what others are doing. I am not close to the details, to say how critical such things are, and if the talk is correct. Anyway, we can't just say that "we're Texas" and sit on or rear-ends for too long. That's the point.
Anyway, let me not hijack this thread on junior day though. Thought I would mention. We should keep an eye on such things, I guess.
I am afraid you will find that they don't want to go to class, but still find a way to stay eligible (just like Mansel). CS correctly says you go to class, and we will help you.
This "go to class" thing doesn't excite many (most?) recruits. It does excite the parents though. CS has a big selling point with his record on that at UL, and I am good with his sticking with that rule.
But what we need is whatever is needed to excite young kids when they come to campus to feel that they can pass the courses the easiest way. They know that they will have to sit in the front row, and are planning to sleep with their eyes open (
), so they will still need someone else to help them pass the courses. And whatever else nice that makes life easier. If that is better plush sofas in the study hall or reminder service (and help?) on home-work submission or whatever it is that the kids feel would make it easier for them, that would help. Such things are already there, but may be it needs an upgrade, fitting with how the kids these days think?
I won't be surprised if these recruits get scared about the "quality academics" at UT. They are probably thinking that they will have to take calculus and micro-economic theory classes from old professors who will throw the chalk at you when you nod off in the first row! Distract them from that thinking with whatever schemes might work with 18 year olds. If our players have not been taking such courses, make sure that these kids know it well! An LSU may not need to tell them that, but a Texas needs to.
I always thought going to class and taking notes was the easiest way to pass. For me, one hour in class was more than equal to two hours studying outside of class. I like the rule even if some recruits don't come because of it. What a concept! Be an actual college student and learn stuff.
Actually, we have the Longhorn Scholars program that will teach 7th grade level courses. I wouldn't make fun of any other school when we are running a middle school and awarding college credit. Too bad the rest of the UT students cant take the courses to raise their gpa.
I don't want to prejudge Strong, maybe he will stress education and not allow his players use of Longhorn Scholars.
^^ I don't know if the Longhorn Scholar program is that bad as you say, but anyway, I hope that he does NOT go after that program now. He has enough other problems to manage, with all the anti-Texas buzz that recruits of A&M, Baylor and other univs continue to propagate, due to whatever mistakes the previous staff did in upsetting enough of them, and with the coaches in the other places doing a good job of recruiting.
UT's PR machinery itself seems quite behind the times in our social media presence, and in getting to the recruits' knowledge-space (or "buzz-space"). There are issues like that which need urgent attention, because those things were a big reason for recruits not knowing what CS is about, which was partly why he could hardly make much recruiting headway in the 15-20 days that he got for recruiting recently. Even for defensive recruits, despite everybody who got to see him saying how great he was. Peer-pressure matters for kids. We have some work to do on that.
To add a fear of failing courses at UT is not what we need to do now.
Let CS start with the "go to class" thing first and let the kids realize that it is actually easier to pass the courses if they just show up in class rather than have twice as much work that they can;t handle otherwise.
Going after the Longhorn Scholars program can wait, whatever is the level they teach it at.
Update on OL Patrick Vahe of Euless Trinity (24/7):
"Those two (Teuhema brothers) decommitting has no impact on me. I don't do what they do - my reasons are different. I have my own goals."
"To be honest, I wanted to go to a school that was popular. Baylor, LSU, UCLA, USC, etc. - everybody hears UT and thinks it's just alright. I questioned it for popularity reasons, but I thought about it maturely and know that Texas is for me."
