Finding an illegal nanny?

My in-laws have an illegal hispanic nanny in Dallas. They found her through word of mouth of their neighbors. She's been working for them for several years and she's fabulous with the kids. How do I find one in Austin and how much do they go for around here? We don't need a live-in, just an eight to fiver three or four days a week.

Spread the word around every place you go. Parties, school, games, etc. Somebody will have one that has a friend, sister, etc.

Of course you always run the risk of her starting a Junta in your backyard, but thats just something you have to chance.

We've got an illegal maid, but I think I'm going legit for my childcare.

The lady that cleans my house has very reasonable rates, speaks no English, only takes cash, and drives a $40,000 car.

I got plenty of them on my ranch near Falfurrias. You could probably get one for a gallon of water and a couple of tacos. If it's really hot, probably for a quart of water.

Call any of the legit agencies and tell them what you want. They can set you up with anything from a PhD for 50K a year to someone who is afraid to even answer the door for $4/hr.

I think it was less intended as an insult than it was an illustration of the extremely dire straits they are in. The people walking through Falfurrias are in a pretty desperate place.

It's a tough situation. I don't know that recognizing their extreme need is the same as an absence of class. You have a request for an illegal alien and someone makes a comment on the situation. Merely making a comment on the situation is going to evoke criticism on the emotionally charged issue, no matter what the comment was. It might have been totally heartless and classless, but I can see a benign motivation, if not a benevolent one.

Only the author can respond.

Is that any less classy than being completely open and brazen about wanting to find a nanny that you can take to the cleaners because they have no legal recourse for better wages and that you always have the INS threat to hold over their head?

Hell, at least his was funny

I agree that the exploitation of illegal workers is not an ethical practice, but at the same time if you're paying them fair wages for their work, then I don't see a problem with it. Hell, you're helping out someone in dire straits.

If the original comment about Mexicans working for tacos and a quart of water was intended as cynical, commenting that it's a ****** thing for anyone to be in such a miserable situation, then I apologize. I read it as making light of the fact that you can take advantage of poor illegal immigrants, using a stereotype of Latinos. I don't find that funny (and would hope that most other people wouldn't either).

Write the following on a napkin: "Necesito una senora para mirar mi nino. Ven conmigo. ". Slide it between the salads and the entrees at any Luby's.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific because it's been 10 years since I lived in Houston and we used them, but we found a network of Guatemalan Seventh-Day Adventists who worked for the usual illegal alien wages, were honest, industrious, intelligent, and cheerful. Your kid might wind up believing that the Earth really was created in six days, but only if he learns enough Spanish from them.

Of course, now we use Buddhist monks for our housecleaning in Columbia. I am not kidding. They're not great housecleaners but we shudder to think of the bad karma that firing them would engender, and they're almost as cheap as the Guatemalans.
