Financial Aid for Low Income Family

Sorry if this has been asked but I did a search and didn't find it.

Does UT have a similar program to A&M that will give free tuition to admitted freshman whose family income is below $60,000?

Yeah.... making under 65K a year does not make a family low income....

I'd totally support that for families under 35K, but 65K? Geez....

I quess it depends on the family. $65K for your 2 person family is not poverty level, but for a family with 4-5 dependents?

I've worked a lot in the fast food industry (I know you're all very jealous), and the average full-time employee there makes around 18-22k a year (that’s minimum wage -7.25 in July - plus the inevitable OT). Most (with families) have more than one job, so let's say they each average 24k a year. You’re looking at a family income of (mom + dad) 48k a year for what we would consider a low-end working class family. 65k doesn't seem high to me when you consider a lot of working class folks have two people providng an income.

I forgot to add in what the future college grad makes too. His/Her income will put you up to 65k easy. Honestly, I don't mind our money being spent on people who are trying to get an education. That's a hand-up not a hand-out.

So $.20 of every $ I send to UT to pay my son's college tuition is set aside to pay for someone elses tuition. Is that right...? Great.....

Maybe $.20 of every $ I send my mortgage company should go to pay for someone elses mortgage.

I will always champion programs to get kids to college that need to be there. But I am not for any program that just sends kids to college because they come from a low income or impoverished background. We as a country need the best and brightest to get an education but not all fit the bill.

Would suck to earn $61k or $66k or whatever. We earn well over those amounts, but I thought our "progressive" tax structure was designed to accomplish things like this. Both my wife's and my parents put themselves through college. I'd like to think that's still an option for those who really want it badly enough.
