Finally went to Salt Lick

been in Austin ten years and I just finally go there. Atmoshphere is A+, but the BBQ, maybe a C. It just wasn't all that.

That's the general opinion around here, though there are a handful of posters who rate the 'cue much higher. For me, I've always considered the Salt Lick a great experience more than a great dining option.

the bread is ****** imo. if you are going to do ****** bread, do it like they do it in lockhart and just give you slices of mrs. bairds out of the sack.

I prefer the bbq at Rudy's over Salt Lick but the atmosphere at the SL is priceless.

the drive....the old bldgs....the pits....the crowd....byob....it's all abt the atmosphere

great place to take OOS friends

the q is ok, but the sauce and sides - esp the tater salad & slaw - are special

mesohorny, it is a great place to take people from out of town and especially out of state. this is what people think of when they think of Texas. now obviuosly you have to show them around austin to let them know that Texas is not all about that though.

There's a Salt Lick at the Red Rock Hotel/Casino in Vegas.

I told the locals it's a very average 'Q.

i have been to the SL 5 times. twice it was just ok but the other 3 times it was the best bbq i have ever tasted. it was incredible!

love that place and their food!

The sausage at the Salt Lick is Earl Campbell's - almost reason enough to go there just for that.

Do yourself a favor, and don't go drinking Whiskey while your there. Does not mix well at all.

And I have to get their recipe for potato salad. That **** is the tits.

I like their ribs a lot. brisket is good, but nothing special. I like their food much better than black's, based on my small samples.

overally, I really enjoy eating there when I get the chance.

Went to Salt Lick last night. Not too crowded for a Friday. Ribs were decent, not as good as Ben's Long Branch, but still really good. Sausage was OK, but Ben's kicks the crap out of it. Brisket was just so-so.

They were out of habanero sauce, which for me is the main reason to go.

And yes, Rudy's extra moist is indeed allsome.
