Finally watched Deadwood

I bought and got around to watching the whole Deadwood series. OK, could have been really good, terrible ending.

The sherrif was just the actor's impersnation of Clint Eastwood. If I was his business partner I'd have been pissed - he never did anywork in the store at all.

For being set in an interesting time and place, in the Black Hill before it was annexed, I didn't think they used that aspect to make the stories better. It really could have been set anywhere in the west in a boom town. I'd have liked more of a tie in with that time and place - conflicts with the Indians, treaty issues, how it got annexed, and more details about the gold rush. All you ever saw about the gold mines were a couple of passing scenes set in the mining areas.

Ian McShane was awesome, of course, and carried the entire show. The banter between him and EB was the highlight. I'd have liked to have the entire show use period language and grammer - like the new version of True Grit. But they probably figured no one would want to watch it like that, so they added in all the contractions.

The ending sucked. Sucked bad. Chrome off a trailer hitch bad. All that build up about a big battle, and nothing happended. The Gerernal McRainly chracter who's name I forget now chopped off Al's fingers, killed the nice miner, fixed the elections, and not only do the main characters let him leave, but they murder one of their own girls to cowardly surrender to him. And after that big deal about the letter the Sherrif wrote to the murdered miner's family - they just roll over and kill some innocent girl so things will be easy for them.

Is there more to it that I didn't catch as to why they folded up, or did HBO just run out of time and money to have an actual ending? At least something in character with what I'd think Al and the Sherrif would do - fight it out, at least a little bit.

I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, but the last year ruined the entire series for me. It just went on and on without purpose, then the fold up ending. Your thoughts, and if you liked it, please expain.

i dont believe the last deadwood was supposed to be the series finale. it was just supposed to be the finale for that year. then it went bye bye. which was strange because it was a big hit.

Have you listened to the commentaries yet? I highly recommend listening to all those extras, especially the ones with David Milch and also the ones with McShane and Olyphant. Milch for insight into his creative process (which is quite impressive) and McShane/Olyphant for the humor.

I agree with you: Olyphant as sheriff (and I like Olyphant) was pretty wooden with a very limited ranged of emotion. He seemed to talk through clenched teeth most of the time.

EB was great, for sure.

The ending was weird. From what I've read, Milch kind of abandoned Deadwood and was starting/putting his energies into a new HBO show, "John From Cincinnati" (or something similar to that name), leaving Deadwood to wither and die on the vine (and imo it definitely did wither and die). There was some talk about having a Deadwood movie or two but I think that ship sailed a while ago.

Don't let the messy "ending" ruin it for you. It was great regardless of the meltdown at the end.

But be sure to listen to all the commentaries. You'll even see ZZ Top.

It's my understanding that HBO did not renew the actors' contracts which was the first warning that they were cancelling the series. The series was cancelled then there was talk of a movie to round out the series, but terms were never agreed upon.

I think it's on HBO that the series ends abruptly. The notion that Milch "didn't get around" to writing the movie isn't how it works. Milch wouldn't write unless there was money and a contract. If there were money and a contract, Milch would have written the movie or found someone else to do so.

I think Deadwood is the best series ever made for TV. I didn't like it when I saw only a few mid season episodes, but loved it when I watched it from the first. I never thought anything would edge out The Wire, but Deadwood did, at least for me.

My statement was based off of comments made by McShane a couple of years ago while he was promoting "Kings." Apparently Milch wasn't interested, he was too focused on John From Cincinnati, and so HBO never pursued beyond that.

I loved the ending of the first season where the doctor's prayer is answered and all loose ends are tied up. It probably should have ended there.

I thought the shark was jumped when they had the extremely contrived lesbian scene between Josie and Calamity Jane.

I thought the character played by Powers Boothe was incomplete. They should have given him one tiny semblance of a redeeming quality for that much of an investment in time, but no. !00% despicable which was predictable and boring. 97% bad would have been so much more interesting.
