finally ate at City Market in Luling

and it was even better than my very high expectations after reading threads about it here.

I would punch Mike Tyson in the nads for one more sausage ring.

When we walked in at 2pm there were probably 30 people in line. Line went pretty quickly, though, and we got our food in a very reasonable time frame.

The whole time we were eating, I don't think the line of people ever got below 15, and at one point was probably 60 people long.

We saw people buying over $100 worth of BBQ. (usually taking it to go)

I'm just glad I read about it on Hornfans, because I'm not sure I would have ever made it past Lockhart before that.

It's worth going the extra distance past Lockhart...

I went there once with a friend and we were very hungry...ordered a ton of brisket/ribs/sausage because it looked and smelled so great.

We took a table towards the front, and started to just chow down. Silently. This **** was fantastic, but neither of us felt the need to say anything, the awesomeness was too obvious to require words. As we ate, the line got longer until people were essentially standing by our table, watching us eat.

This old man looked down at us and said "you boys ordered way too much, you'll never finish all that."

I pulled the rib away from my face, and with a mouth full of food, looked up at him angrily and said "SO?"

I then buried my face back down and continued eating like an angry carnivore.

That one moment summed up my Luling City Market experience. It was a religious experience.

Ha, yeah I have some friends from Luling so I have been there a couple of times. I know BBQ places aren't judged on their sauce but I dig their sauce (more mustard that tomato).

Got dangit, I have to go. I planned on it from reading that same thread but now there is more urgency. Hmmm. Sunday maybe.

loopy, better make it saturday. they are closed on sundays.

i went this past weekend, and was disappointed. mind you, ive probably been over 10 times, and it is in my top 5. at times my top 1. but this last time, brisket was dry, sausage was coarse and unflavorful. ribs were good, but not as meaty as i like. sauce kicked *** as always. i'm not forming any longterm opinions afterwards. when you smoke 200 briskets a day, you're bound to overdo 1 or 2. i think i just got a bad sample.

last time i was there i asked them if i could rent out a space in the back corner of the restaurant to put a cot in and live there, but sadly they said no

I can't imagine better ribs; hot, moist and greasy on the inside, and crunchy on the outside. Afterwards, even after washing your hands, they smell like post oak smoke for hours. Wonderful, mustard and vinegar sauce to dip the meat in, and Shiner Bock available to wash it all down.

I've eaten there once and it ruined BBQ for me here in Dallas. The Lockhart places are close, but City Market pwns all.

Anyone tried Hard 8 in Stephenville? they built one in Coppell and I tried yesterday. meh. I guess they need to let their pits season for a couple years. Banana pudding was righteous though.

its funny

living in houston, we have the best options for just about any type of cuisine you can imagine..........EXCEPT FOR THE TYPE THAT TEXAS IS KNOWN FOR

world class thai, indian, vietnamese, chinese, italian, mexican etc etc etc

I went last Saturday, too, and found the brisket to be average. Maybe I got a below standard brisket. I thought the sausage was pretty good. Not a sauce fan, but tried it just in case. I won't have it again.

Therefore, it shall be necessary for me to return and give it another shot.

You guys might be referencing my recent post re: my tour of central texas bbq.... in which I proclaimed Luling City Market to be the best in the area (and best I've ever tried).

I highly recommend you get a group of buddies and do the BBQ tour thing. I can't think of a better time than I had with my friends touring all the famous joints aound here.

actually, i like luthers and pappas bbq better than rudys, or any we have here in sa. houston also has goode co and thelmas. quitcher bellyachin.

Goode Company is ******* terrible and it constantly amazes me that anybody likes that place. Luthers is about as good as Bill Miller's. I haven't been to Pappas in a couple of years but I remember it being nothing to write home about. Thelmas is good but I can only take it in doses. Not to mention I rarely have the 30 minutes it takes to wait in line for lunch.

Wow, were we all at Luling City Market last Saturday?

I was there too and my opinion of the brisket exactly matches those above. Very average - actually, my piece was below average. Dry, chewy, fatty. I thought maybe I got a bad cut but it now appears that they had a bad day overall, at least with the brisket (sausage and ribs were outstanding). Oh well, it happens to the best of us.

I've been there before and can testify to its glory but last weekend wasn't it.

Went out to City Market this afternoon. Brisket was excellent, easily a 9/10. The thing that surprised me the most was how incredibly affordable their food was. My friend and I split a pound of brisket and a half pound of ribs for $15 total. That's not a bargain it's a freaking steal. Even cheaper than Rudy's.

I would also like to add that my experience at Cooper's two weeks ago was an absolute disaster. Driest brisket I have ever had in my life, I wouldn't have served it to prisoners. Not to mention the fact that me and my buddy walked out for the low-low price of $37. I will never set foot in that place again.

Commerce - I have tried the hard 8, they have the right idea but they don't have it down like the Lockhart and Luling places.

avg brisket at City Market? wow. Their sauce is awesome. not sure how people could not like it
