Fighting a bad claim against your credit

So I have a friend who lived in an apartment complex, up until Nov 2006. In Nov 2006 he was asked to leave because the manager had found out that he had porn (not child porn, legal normal porn) on his computer. He was evicted for it (off campus housing for BYU).

Well, since he wasnt allowed to live there the remainder of his that semester and the next, (they sent him letters to collect the remaining months of rent for the term (fall and winter). He decides not to pay it because why would anyone pay rent for an aprtment that they were kicked out of and can't live in. So he then sends a letter threatening legal action against the complex if they continue with their efforts to collect and follow through with their threats to report him to a credit agency. He never hears from them again..... until last week (nearly 2 years later).

How does he go about fighting this claim on his credit? How does he defend himself and his credit against this bad claim against?

Too many unknown facts to provide advice. Need to know more and in no particular order, for starters:

1) What State does he live in now?
2) Does he still have a copy of the lease agreement, eviction notices or another documents?
3) How much in unpaid rent?

how does one not take action immediately against something like that?

how they hell do they know what was on his computer? that's the first thing i'd ask. did he not think that was weird? no clue about the other stuff.

Have him get a credit report to see if it is being reported. He should tell the bill collector that he disputes the debt and that they are not to call him any more.

I had a bogus claim on all of my credit reports last year. I told the bill collectors I didn't know what it was for and they stopped calling, but put it on my record. I just went through the dispute process for each report and they notified me in a couple of weeks that the claim had been removed. Still don't know what it was about.

He doesn't know, but he thinks that maybe a roommate might have entered his bedroom and looked on it.
