Field Turf

Can anyone explain the benefit of having the base wells field turf instead of dirt? I thought David Hernandez hurt himself Sunday sliding into the bag (he didn't stop, just kept going). Home plate is not even dirt anymore, just the pitchers' mound. Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Times change. Every level of the sport has adapted to the technologies and rule changes. Other sports have as well. Purists beware.

Are there other fields in the Big 12 that are configured this way? I know no MLB field is like this - the base wells are dirt.

I wold prefer grass, but have no problem with field turf as long as it's not in the batter's box, around the bases, etc. That's where the dirt belongs.

Funny observations so far...

~ Watching player "dig in" to the batters box
~ Having a fake home plate
~ Watching the umpire brush off the home plate. What's the point?

Well 2 out of 3 of your funny observations are incorrect.

Home plate is real (Its actually the same plate that has been used at the Disch from the past few seasons.)

And the plate does need cleaning when rubber is deposited on the plate.

Crazy Ed...where did your info come from about home plate? I didn't go on the field Sunday, but from the stands, it appeared to be part of the Field Turf. I do completely understand the need to sweep it. Even the batter's box lines looked washed out by the end of the scrimmage.

After reading the sports page this morning, I guess I understand it a little better now - it's hard to get the dirt out of the turf around the bases. I guess that isn't a problem around the pitcher's mound? And the article indicated that Tech's field is configured in this manner, which I didn't know.

I always wanted turf shoes on when playing in the field, but I needed spikes in order to dig in when batting. I guess now players can just go turf shoes all the way. Spikes on turf was just too damn slippery.

The Disch has had some type of turf for a long time. What is the difference in what we had and what they are putting in now?
