USA is 4-0 after going 3-0 to win their bracket. Canada is 2-2 after going 1-2 in bracket play. Hungary, Spain and Australia are also undefeated so far. Japan, Czech Republic and France are the other teams in the quarterfinals.

Czech Republic vs Australia and France vs Spain follow the USA/Canada game. Hungary vs Japan play before the USA and Canada tipoff.

Through Friday, stats from the beginning of the preliminary round, USA has four players in double digits: #12 Katie Samuelson, 13.8 ppg; #10 Asia Durr, 12.8 ppg; #15 Kristine Anigwe, 10.8 ppg & #06 Arike Ogunbowale, 10.3 ppg.

The four Texans are: #09 Joyner Holmes, 8.8 ppg; #13 Lauren Cox, 5.3 ppg; #05 Natalie Chou, 2.3 ppg & #14 Nancy Mulkey, 1.5 ppg. Lauren is the leading rebounder at 8.5 rpg while Joyner is tied for second at 6.3 rpg. Nancy (7 blocks) and Lauren (6 blocks) are one-two in blocks. That’s half of the 26 blocks registered by the USA.

USA defeats Canada, 86-45, advances to semis vs Hungary. Both teams are 5-0. Game time will be 1:15 PM CST.

Czech Republic and Spain will face off two hours earlier in the other semifinal game.

Joyner Holmes led the USA with 24 pts off the bench on 9-15 shooting. Lauren Cox had 6 pts (3-6), 6 rebs and 3 blocks. Natalie Chou had four pts on 2-4 shooting. Nancy Mulkey missed her only FG attempt, hit 2-2 from the FT line, grabbed 3 rebs and had 2 blocks.

FWIW, ESPNU schedule shows game one of FIBA U17 (Czech Republic vs Spain) beginning at 11AM. Hope they also show game two (USA vs Hungary) although the schedule shows E60 in that time slot.

Edit: or did they flip the starting times for those games? That would make more sense, allowing ESPN to show the USA vs Hungary game.

just came on ESPNU.

USA makes FIBA U17 finals with 91-63 win over Hungary

Katie Lou Samuelson hit 6 3pters in the first quarter to lead the way with a game high 25 pts. That was a very pretty and outstanding display of shooting by KLS, as the UConn fans are calling her.

USA will face off with Spain at 1:15 pm CST on ESPNU for the championship.

Our Texans, #13 Lauren Cox, ended up with 3 pts on 1-3 from the field and 1-2 from the FT line; she was the leading rebounder with 7; added a team high in blocks (2), had one steal and tied for second in assists with 2. #9 Joyner Holmes had 11 pts on 4-9 shooting and 3-4 from the FT line, tied for second in rebounding with 6, had two assists and two steals. #14 Nancy Mulkey was 2-2 from the field, 2-2 from the FT line for six pts, added 2 rebounds, one assist and one block in five minutes. #5 Nancy Chou missed both 3pters she attempted and had 3 rebounds.

USA wins the gold, 77-75, piggybacking on Lauren’s outstanding performance. A controversial offensive foul call near the end of the game negated a 3 by Spain’s Maite Cazorla that would have made it a 1 pt game. But the Spainard set the block with her elbows up, kinda like a football block. I think if she had kept her arms down, there would have been no offensive foul called.Angela Salvadores led Spain with 38 pts. Lauren lead the USA with 20 pts and double digit rebounds. She had a basketful of blocks as well.

All tournament team:

Debora Dubei, Hungary
Katie Lou Samuelson, USA
Angela Salvardores, Spain
Joyner Holmes, USA
Virág Kiss. Hungary

MVP:
Angela Salvardores, Spain

Congrats to KLS and Joyner for making the All Tournament team.

Edited to add: Lauren had 20 pts, 12 rebs, and 8 blocks. Stepped up big when the chips were on the line.

In the closing quarter of the championship game, Durr and Cox were outstanding, showing why they, generally, have long been considered the number one prospect in their respective classes. Homes was impressive throughout the tournament and Samuelson's shooting ability was critical.

Based on the time of some of Coach Aston's recent tweets, I had been wondering if she was in attendance. Appears as if she was:

To me, Joyner Holmes was very impressive. Lots of energy and effort, strong build and quickness, and a great skill set. We could really use her as our Power Forward of the future.

I think someone on the UConn board said she and other coaches were there for the final game. Hadn't seen Joyner play other than last summer at the Horns camp. She is really something else. I would love to see her and Cox and the other two Texans decide to come to Texas.
